Gaia?

Postby Miripet97 » Sun Jun 13, 2010 12:24 am

Sorry to sound so, well, new, but I am. I heard the name Gaia today, and it just keeps ringing in my head. I know Gaia is a goddess of some sort, but details just won't come to me. Can anyone tell me?

Gaia is the Mother and Earth Goddess typically she's depicted as a pregnant woman who's belly is actually the earth.

click here for an example -linked out because I do not know who the artist is.

She's a Greek Titan personifying the earth

"Gaia is a compound word of two elements. Ge, meaning 'Earth' ....Aia is a derivative of an Indo-European stem meaning 'Grandmother'. So Gaia could actually mean "Grandmother Earth'." -wikipedia

in the greek pantheon we're usually familiar with there are 12 gods- reigned over by zeus and hera. everyone knows about these- artemis, apollo, aphrodite, etc... but theyre actually the 3rd generation of greek gods.
zeus (who was originally a storm god, also king of gods), his sister and wife Hera (originally a childbirth goddess), their older sisters Demeter (grain and agriculture), Hestia (the home and hearth, a virgin goddess, more mysterious and less well known), brothers Hades (king of the dead) and Poseidon (oceans) are children of the Titans.
There were 12 Titans and all that is rly important about them is that they were in power before their children who killed one and deposed of their rule, just as the Titan Cronos castrated and deposed of his father Uranos.
Uranos and Gaia are the parents of the Titans and are the demi-urge of Greek Gods (the Gods present at creation). Gaia is the earth, and the above representation is correct- she is shows as pregnant and her body is the earth (breasts as hills, hair as rivers, etc) while Uranos is the sky/heavens.

Interestingly, if you hear of nymphs, evidence shows that in matriarchal times the nymphs were regional nature goddesses, and the patriarchy basically demoted them, in greek stories theyre minor beings that gods often rape and impregnante. In more ancient times they were worshipped in their own right.

James Lovelock reintroduced the Gaia theory. He proposed to the scientific community that the Earth was a living, breathing, conscious entity. He received a lot of ridicule, but it did help to bring the awareness of the Mother back into our world; reawakened it, so to say.
