hmmm?
To put it simply a book of shadows is a witch's cookbook and journal.
When you find usefull information you want to keep this where you write them. from spells, to herb properties and gemstone working!
try to have it as much organized as you can so it will be easy to use in the future..
ps your bos (book of shadows) can be a simple notebook, try finding one with blank pages so that you can make drawings for instructions, add printed fotographs of your crafts and work, and whatever..
if you have more questions feel free to pm me.

My first bit of advice is to tell you that wicca does not mean witchcraft. Wicca is a small religion revolving around believing in one god and one goddess, witchcraft is an action. paganism is a HUGE group of beliefs involving everything you could imagine.
You do not have to be wiccan to be a witch. Im not wiccan and many other here do not believe anything that wicca says, yet we can still be witches.
I am pagan, paganism is like a group of religions and beliefs, Wicca is a pagan religion, as is shamanism, druidry, and even satanism. My advice is to look up paganism and witchcraft, NOT wicca. IF you later decide wicca is the one for you then fair enough but look at the rest of the world first
Secondly a book of shadows is just a notebook, either plain and simple or even elaborate leather bound type books into which you write the magickal stuff you learn. It is like a witches encyclopedia where you can write spells, meanings etc... all to look at later when you need to remember something but cant.
You dont need one at all, but it helps some people to remember their stuff.

You arent the only one to think that
A lot of newcomers do, it isnt your fault but the fault of witchy sites/books, they all suggest that a wiccan is a witch but it isnt true. Think of it like this, i can go to church, but that doesnt make me a christian. I can be a christian, but not go to church (so long as i worship some other way.)
The same goes for a pagan, i can cast spells (go to church) but i dont have to be wiccan. Equally, i can be Wiccan (christian) and not cast spells.
It's a little difficult to explain for me, i know what i am trying to say but i cant get it out in words! Wicca is like a set of beliefs, a god and goddess, 4 elements and spirit, an afterlife called the summerlands, no curses etc...
but paganism is HUGE. Curses, hexes, healing and protection etc... all sorts of gods and goddesses, celtic, norse, egyptian etc... all sorts of ideas on the afterlife, even a heaven/hell type thing im sure. Anything that remotely involves nature and isnt christian, judaism etc.. is essentially paganism. And like me it is possible to be just pagan, i dont follow any religion, i make my own as do others here.
Anyway... im rambling.

always nice to hear
So tell us, what sort of things do you believe in? And what sort of things are you hoping to get from paganism? Are you hoping to "specialise" into one branch like healing, protection etc... or just browsing until you make a decision? Not that you have to decide anything of course, most often things just fit into place.

Well, not reading all of what Shadow said, i just want to say my BOS is a simple binder with pages of papers with all types of things.
I have rituals in there, herbal remedies, God/desses. All kinds of things that help me out when i need help constructing a spell that needs more then one item to channel energy.
Well, i think i've gone on long enough.

First, let me welcome you to this forum. It is wonderful to see new people to the Craft who want to learn and grow. The BOS has already been covered but I wanted to give you a little bit more on approaching your path. Work with different modes such as healing, tarot reading, etc. I naturally fell into the mode of healing and herbal work as well as tarot but find the path that resonates with you. Read, read, read!! Good luck and we always welcome questions
