Question on the Gods

Postby imaginari » Mon May 30, 2011 4:45 pm

I'm still a newbie to all of this. I have a question about gods/goddesses. I've read that you'll just 'know' which God/Goddess to worship. But, well, is there a list somewhere of them? (haha) How do you find information on the gods? I guess I should go to the library and research a bit more, eh? I just feel like I'm missing something with the Gods/Goddesses here. I"ve always just prayed to "God" never really assigning it an identity. Any info or direction on what to read would be great!!

Well I would start with figuring out which pantheon you are most drawn to and then go from there. Start here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantheon_(gods)

There are too many Gods/Goddesses but ever felt drawn to something certain? For example, if you love the sea and you feel drawn to the element of water, maybe your god will be a water deity.

I suggest reading mythology. First start reading myths that you already know and remember from a kid and eventually read myths from many different cultures. Eventually you will stumble upon a culture that inexplicably fascinates and calls to you and from there you will find deities by reading more myths from that culture. OR you can always just call upon God and Goddess as just that. NO names are necessary. Some people prefer them but a name is just a name. Its the energy of "GOD/ESS" that we want to connect with not the name. You can even choose to not say GOD AND GODDESS you can say Universal Power or even just GOD. The point is to look for and see the balance of male and female good and bad in everything. Accept this truth and contemplate it and devlop your beliefs from there. Call upon GOD by whatever name you are comfortable with. I know when you are new this can seem like "your not really doing it right" BUT you really are. Follow your heart. There is no reason you should HAVE TO call upon GOD by any name you dont want to. The reason for the myths is because it introduces you to the mindset of the culture and the different aspects of "GOD" that our pagan ancestors knew by different names.
