Synchronizing your personal Pantheon

Postby Victoria Mnemosyne » Wed Jun 29, 2011 2:15 pm

How do you set up your personal pantheon?

Like many on the pagan path, I respect and worship various deities from different cultures around the world. Being a virgo (I'm a HUGE organizer) I feel the need to sync up my personal pantheon, and give it some sort of order or sense in the way that a pantheon from one culture does. When you begin to blend deities from different pantehons, it becomes more complicated.

What if you end up with four love goddesses and one storm god? What if you favor a moon goddess AND a solar goddess?

I know many would say, "whatever floats your boat". For the purpsoe of rituals and worship, I wouldn't be okay with this. I'm looking for ways people sync up their personal pantheons.

Personally, my list of interest looks something like this:
Nin'ana, Persephone, Isis, Saule, Apollo, Enki, Dionysus, Bast, Lilith, Ariadne, and Asherah, although I feel the need for a lunar deity, a storm god, a sea deity and an earth mother.

What do you mean synchronizing your Pantheon? Like haveing one for every need that you are looking for? Or developing a hierarchy with in the gods you are worshipping? I don't get the question.

I'm sorry if that was unclear... What I meant by that was, not only having one for everything, but more in the way of making sure they don't conflict with their dominions- step on eachother's toes, etc. Like having two or more that are "in charge" of the same thing.

Well, that is a task. The only way to do it is research research research, look into many established paths and ethnic backgrounds I am working on a list of deities that may intrest you.

http://www.pantheon.org/ may be a great resource for getting to know gods not of the "popular" faiths. I wish you luck. I wrote a whole other reply and then notice that all the gods I suggested were slavic ( I gues I felt like pushing LOL)

haha don't ever feel bad about "pushing" the slavic faith, it is not very well known and I would be thankful for the information (as I'm sure would others reading) :) Do you have a post about them up somewhere on the message board?

This is a non-complete list that I posted a while ago.

I take a slightly different approach, in that I don't put a lot of emphasis on keeping the tasks separate. The way that I view things, all deities are equal, simply different "families" in both genealogical and metaphysical senses. There are going to be aspects that overlap simply out of the limits of archetypal concepts, and in my view, this is what ultimately keeps those divine "families" separate as a whole; in order to maintain their relevance, they divided the world and claimed certain groups of people. However, as the world has grown into such a global community, those boundaries really are irrelevant now. Personal resonance is far more important than origins. While I'm primarily dedicated to the Morrigan and devote most rites to her name and other Celtic divinities, depending on the occasion I may invoke the Norse, the Egyptian, or the various archangels, for example.

I tend to venerate more versatile figures than the highly specialized ones, out of a personal preference. The Morrigan, Cernunnos, and Odin are the main three that I consider my "go to" gods. Once you have that "core" established, I would say pick your specialized figures based on need at the time. There may be overlap in these specialists, but for the most part, there are going to be details and variations on the archetype that will keep them each unique and separate enough to not get lost in the shuffle.
