Moon phases view / Goddess symbol

Postby FireQueen » Wed Jun 22, 2011 8:31 am

A day or so ago a few of us were chatting about the difference in the way that the Moon looks from the Northern hemisphere as opposed to the Southern hemisphere and how the symbol for the Moon came about and how that symbol then became the symbol for the Triple Goddess....

I quite clearly remember having a conversation about the Moon with my maternal Grandmother when I was a young child ~ I remember that the Moon was a sliver in the sky and she told me "something" about it that makes it look different between hemispheres but I can't remember what!

If you have a look at the >> Moon Phases Calendar << it's patently obvious that there IS a difference when you change the setting for Northern hemi to Southern, but I'm not sure that I fully understand yet....

The Moon Goddess symbol is )O( which corresponds with the way the Moon looks as it phases...... but ..... the calendar looks as though the phases are different between the hemispheres....

So... just throwing this out there to see if anyone can help / what others think.

I didn't realize the difference pretty interesting. Is the moon goddess prevalent in Southern Hemisphere regions? I will have to check. What made you decide to look into it if I can ask.

I was a part of this conversation in the chat and this was a very interesting thing to me. In the northern hemisphere where i live the moon waxes looking like this ) but in the southern it waxes looking like this ( obviously the full is the same 0 but for the wanning the nothern is ( and the southern is ) The symbol )0( was derived in the northern hemisphere and was showing the phases of the moon which later became associated with the goddess and her triple aspect of )=maiden 0= mother and (= crone ....waxing,full,wannig= maiden, mother, crone

If you are in the southern hemisphere than to write this symbol, in my opinion would be more appropriate to keep with what is true to your area of the world. The symbol would go like this...(0)

That symbol is kinda reminiscent of "lady parts" dont ya thinl?? It still would definately relate to the goddess as it looks like a vagina. Seeing as how the Goddess started as a Goddess of Fertility. Not only does that symbol embody the "fertility" aspect of Goddess but is also moon phase appropriate to the southern hemisphere. Personally, If i were in the Southern Hemisphere I'd use that symbol instead of )0( it seems more suiting and equally as valid!!!! Its up to you though. Keep in mind just because someone tells you )0( means the goddess doesnt mean it has to mean that for you.

What I found out in reading:
Doseil - sun appears to move anti clock wise. Widdershins is clockwise. Essentially the opposite to the Northern Hemisphere even though the Sun raises and sets East/ West.

Sabbats - are opposite

East (Air) and West(Water) hold their traditional representations, however the North/ South orientations are exchanged. The North is fire whilst the South is Earth.

This has been an interesting topic. Especially reading about how most material is Northern Hemisphere based.

Im in the southern hemisphere and I look at )0( to be the sign of the Goddess... Everything is kind of the other way around from your side of the equator... or is it our side? lol

Which ever way you see the symbol of the Goddess { )0( or (0)} doesn't really matter as long as you can connect to the symbol. I will always see the symbol of the Goddess as {)0(} no matter the hemishpere because it is a symbol. The symbol has become greater than the reason why it became a symbol.

Oooooh, oooooh, ooooh!

I remembered what my Grandmother told me.... the Moon for her looked to be upside down in the Southern Hemisphere and it looks as though it's going backwards to those who grew up with looking at it from the perspective of being in the Northern Hemisphere.

Now..... this still doesn't make sense to me though.... I still don't understand how it can look backwards/upside down just by changing hemispheres?
