Why would a God/dess need you?

Postby Lightbringer » Tue Aug 13, 2013 9:26 pm

I was reading the "Why would a Goddess choose you" thread, and one user said they call to you when you need them, or when they need you.

What are some reasons that a deity would need a human mortal for? Perhaps to do work on earth on their behalf? (e.g. spreading the word about them, bringing the qualities they stand for into the world, etc.) I can't think of anything else. What are your thoughts?

Have you ever felt called to do the work of a particular deity?

Bast entered my life years ago, when Blanca died. Recently, Sekhmet has become part of my life as well. It seems that my duties are expanding.

Why would a God/dess need you?

Hi Lightbringer,

You may not believe it but I was recently called by Hecate. She did not appear in my dreams, but I heard howling dogs from a distance on a new moon. After some reading, I learned that Hecate is associated with both howling dogs and the dark moon/new moon when the moon is not visible.

I did not know why she was calling me, and wasn't even certain it was her. So I dedicated one night to find out. I scried my crystal quartz and saw what appeared like a crown. I closed my eyes and saw visions of a meteor falling from the sky. Then I saw a woman emerging from the sea. It wasn't making sense.

I then held on to my African Pietersite which had a gold Tiger's Eye on it. My pendulum directed me towards this stone the night before, when I heard the first howling of the dog. I closed my eyes and saw a woman in the woods at night, gesturing me to come to her. It still didn't make any sense.

So I did my research and literally shed a tear when I found out...

1. Black stones and Tiger's Eye are associated to Hecate. My African Pietersite is black with Tiger's Eye.

2. In one of Hecate's mythologies, she fell from the sky after the fall of Olympus in the form of a flaming meteor and crashed into the sea.

3. Hecate is sometimes depicted with a crown of stars.

4. Hecate is goddess of the dying and hospice.

By the time I learned of this, I suddenly knew WHY Hecate was calling me. You see, just after my grandmother developed a headache that kept her in bed, I heard the howling dog, was led to the Pietersite by my pendulum, and was given these visions. My grandmother WAS DYING and when I realized WHY Hecate was calling me, my grandmother was already in a coma. Before she died hours later, I was able to care for her and change her clothes to something more appropriate.

I believe Hecate called me because she wanted me to help my grandmother in her final hours. She wanted me to assist her in this physical realm and to emulate her just as she assisted in the passage of the souls to the afterlife.

I personally do not believe Hecate exists, as do other deities. But I believe that divine being(s) manifest to us in the FORMS of deities.

So my answer to your question is that deities call us to emulate them at times when we need to...

So, how did you know? What made you decide to read up on howling dogs?

How did I know it was the divine calling me? I didn't at first. The first night I heard the dog howl, I looked it up online. I knew there was a goddess associated to howling dogs at night so I started there. That's when I read about Hecate. On that night, I only remember reading up on her associations: Nights when the moon wasn't visible, and particularly that she was the goddess of change.

Second night the dog howled (which was the day after I heard the first howl), I decided to do some scrying and use my stones for psychism. When I was able to confirm it was indeed the divine calling me in the form of Hecate, it still didn't make sense. I still didn't know WHY. So once again, I shrugged it off.

Third night. No dog howling this time. My grandmother suddenly experienced a deterioration in mental alertness. From having a headache she went into a state of confusion, became stuporous, and shifted to comatose in a matter of HOURS. It was then that I decided to read even more about Hecate. That's when I discovered that she was a goddess of the dying and hospice :(
