What are some things I can use to represent the Lord?

Postby asthesunlovesthemoon » Sun Nov 24, 2013 5:05 pm

I'm starting to build an altar, but I'm wondering what I can use to represent the masculine powers of the universe?

I often have the same trouble. Some people use a black candle, a yellow candle, citrine crystals to represent the sun, a picture of the God, anything representing the sun or rebirth, the horned God symbol. These are just the simple ones but I'd like to know how other people decorate.

I know this sounds a little perverted, but some people do get quite literal with their male symbolism and use objects that closely resemble the phallus. I believe that early traditions of Wicca used a wand that had an acorn attached to or carved into the end as a male symbol. The athame is considered to be of male nature, and it's used with the chalice to create a symbolic Great Rite in place of the act itself. Horns and antlers are popular male symbols, especially with those that acknowledge the God in His "horned" aspect, especially as Herne, Pan, Cernunnos, etc.
The Goat of Mendes, also known as Baphomet, is a widely recognized male occult symbol, but some people shy away from using it due to its association with Satanism. You don't have to use Baphomet specifically, but goats and rams have been used as occult symbols, and associated with horned gods.

Echo, I don't think this sounds perverted at all. If the chalice represents the womb of the Goddess, I don't see any reason why the athame can't represent the phallus of the God. I find sexual metaphors to be fairly common both now and historically to represent the Lord and the Lady.

I know that some of us will find such symbolism natural, but I thought I would provide a bit of a warning in case a few immature minds come across my response and take it the wrong way. Body parts are funny that way. :P

You can use a variety of different things based on how you view your Goddess & God.

If money is tight you could pick up a piece of moonstone and sunstone to represent the Goddess & God if you see the Goddess as the Moon and the Sun as God.

You could get a yin/yang symbol, the white representing God and black the Goddesses.

If you work with Cernunnos, Pan or another horned god you could get a bull or goat horn to leave on your altar.

If you work with the Greenman you could get a plain white plastic mask (halloween/costume mask) and glue preserved or faux leaves onto it and hang it on the God side of your altar.

Hope you might be able to find something helpful. :)
