Good sources for Loki and Norse mythology?

Postby Sakura Blossom » Tue May 13, 2014 11:52 pm

I have read some stuff on Loki, and I'm WORKING on TRYING to read the Poetic Edda, but it's taking a lot of time of course. Haha. But I've finally decided on whether or not I'd like to read about other Norse traditions. I know that a majority of them do not like those that work with Loki, but I'm curious to see what their traditions are and to read about them as well as anything Norse. I'm heading to a bookstore tomorrow, so I thought I'd ask if anyone has any suggestions on books?

Thank you!

I don't recommend it, unless you wish for continued chaos and disorder in your life. I have heard he is not one to take lightly, or contact on a casual basis.
But then those who are on the heathen path may be able to advise you better than I.

I've had many posts about this already, actually. lol I think they got pushed back in the forums, but I've talked in length with a few people about him as well as how he's contacted me, so now I'm now looking for input about those who do work with him to compare experiences. He's been working with me for awhile, but I only just realized recently it was him. But thank you for your input. (: I appreciate it! He chose me, not the other way around in all honesty, and I have been working with him for awhile now. (: not too long, though. I've found others saying that if he chooses you, you don't really have a choice. I never sought him out, he found me. I was thinking about not doing it, but I knew he'd come to me for a reason, and once I explored the reasoning, I realized I couldn't say no. It felt right too.

It's been an amazing experience so far. Things will be bad, but something good ALWAYS comes out of it. He chose me due to the fact that he thinks I can handle him and the truths he will show, and I have been able to so far. I've been able to catch him at his own game too, which has been rather interesting.

I'm sorry if my thoughts seem scattered, I'm really tired right now. Haha.

Just like what I said in the previous convos I and Sakura had, many people see the Chaos or Discord Deities such as Loki and Eris as being mean or ugly or They are the reason of misery and disorder in people's lives; but the fact is, They weren't being mean or rude, but rather just and honest and They aren't the reason of these miseries and disorders, it's us.

I don't work with Loki but work with three Chaos Goddesses namely Eris, Kali and Oya and tricksters like Eleggua, Papa Legba and Hermes and other major Deific Daemons from Ugaritic mythos and some Orishas Gbigbona (hot, temperamental Deities of Yoruba tradition) who are very much alike with Loki. The pranks, the challenges, the pain, the sufferings, the storms, the plague and the destruction, I know in myself that I deserved those after unawarely or unintentionally messing around with something that I still have no real comprehension of. And the reality is, my Gods and Goddesses only become "trickster or prankster or Adversary " with me after I deliberately do something inappropriate or unlikeable. My actions always have dire consequences!

Anyway, to show me how terrible, unwise, dishonest or hypocrite I am sometimes, They play prank, create obstacles and make bad things happen -- which has to hurt me tremendously. Although this seems "mean" on the surface, the bottom line is, my Deities were trying to get through to me the seriousness of my actions I believe.

I'm not a dedicated follower of Loki myself (though I do make the occasional offering to Him, as with most of the Norse gods and goddesses) but I know man people who are.

Many of Loki's followers are female, which is interesting given Loki's flexible gender. I don't think he necessarily will bring chaos to your life, but he might set you against adversity. He seems to be a God or trickster-spirit of sheer adaptability, changing forms as needed. It seems, to an only-sometimes Loki-worshiper like me, that S/He is unconstrained by gender boundaries.

There are a lot of so-called "Lokeans" or "Lokians" around the internet at the moment. It has been an interesting experience, observing the pagan phenomenon alongside the cultural one. However, I have also studied Loki and His worship in an academic capacity. At the moment, Loki is attracting both scholarly and general attention. As a being, as a God/ess, as an ideal, as a symbol. Loki is one to pay attention to in the coming days, I feel. Whether it is due to pop culture or not, his worship seems to be peaking. You should definitely look into it.

I've already been working with him for a bit now, haha, but thank you! (: He prefers to be a God with me. Though when he first showed up, it was as a woman to try and throw me off. He's a very enjoyable God to work with, and I rather enjoy it. (: He's brought a lot of joy into my life, but also some struggles. However, these struggles always bring something good. They're merely lessons that I need to work on. (: And I have seen many people who call themselves Lokians too. Haha! But reading through some of their accounts and some other things, I have to wonder whether it was influenced by pop culture or not... But I'm not one to judge. (: Whatever makes them happy!

Thank you for your input. (:

Alright, I updated this one a bit more and totally switched gears. Haha. This question was answered so I figured might as well repurpose the thread instead of making a new one. (:

Sacred text.com is a great place to find the Lore.

Norse/Icelandic texts on Sacred-texts.com

The lore of the Germanic/Nordic religions are the Prose and Poetic Eddas (though the Prose Edda has more of a Christian influence than the Poetic Edda).

Oh, I just saw that, Loona. Haha. I already use that site. x3 Thank you though! I have been reading the Poetic Edda for awhile now. Well, trying to. I haven't had the time. Dx

And I just edited the topic, everyone. x3 To better fit what I'm looking for now.
