Re: Who is the green man?
There are a lot of theories surrounding "The Green Man". He predates Christianity. He is believed to be nature personified as a man, or the male balance of nature. Symbolising growth and rebirth in the seasonal cycle of the coming spring and life of man. It is a notion that man was born from nature and directly tied to the fate of nature. As the seasons change it is again the cycle of man or "ages of man".
From an archaeological standpoint in the evidence of per-christan "Green Man" the meaning of it symbolises man's cultivation of the natural world as we once depended on it to provide for us (food as foragers).
He is depicted a lot in English folklore connected with the stories of Jack of the Green and the May King. He is the God of vegetation and life and is mentioned in the stories of Sir Gawain.
In recent times he is associated with the aspect of the "Horned God" and Cernunnos through Wicca.
