The Good Reaper
--------------------
Skeleton, ancient, timeless,
large, inhuman,
Decayed rags for a cloak,
mausoleum garments,
musty,
Soft as fur as I'm carried as a child.
Powerful,
Beyond,
Dutiful.
Silent.
A friend.
safe, alert and happy.
a train trip,
school year's done.

Wolf, I'm so sorry. This is really crass but I couldn't stop myself.
'Damnation' - was so contrary to the image I hold
in my mind that I was actually offended.
No worries, *you* didn't offend me, not one bit, but your poem cast the
reaper in such a nasty role that I was driven to defend it.
The poem's idea and my somewhat odd compulsion to defend
a non-existent creature comes from a dream I once had
(maybe 10-15 years ago).
I had died and was carried off by none other than the Grim Reaper.
Ever since that dream it's been impossible for me to identify that classic
image with anything other than complete benevolence.

To be honest, I rattled it off fairly quickly using my dream as a basis.
The dream I had was such a long time ago that I don't think I can
do it full justice, but I did feel compelled to share a hint of it as best I could.
It still has an effect on me today but I hadn't thought on it for a some time
before reading Wolf's poem.
