Not weird, this definitely seems like contacting, just reaching out and then listening.I always just talk to my deities. It's more like a coworker relationship. I don't know if that makes me weird. It seems to work. It's like we have a give and take. What do they need me to do, what do I need them to do.

We use a technique which can be helpful in contacting communication and that is to project the deity you wish to speak with into a natural object. For instance, if wishing to speak with Brighde, imagine she is in the well or spring or maybe in the fire or candle flame since those are her places of power. Trees and large (or even small) rocks works well, though the connection should be encompassing something associated with the deity.
