An altar is a structure where offerings are offered for religious purposes.
I'm presuming you want a pagan altar but really what you put on your altar is entirely up to you and your gods :D
For instance my altar consists of a candle, house Plant, incense, pentagram, chalice and crystals but I change it and add to it throughout the year and decorate it at certain festivals.

I found this article that I though you might like to read.

If you're looking at hoodoo practices, you might want to ask yourself why you would want an altar at all.

Thank you very much I apprecate this information, but do you delieve it is safe to make one without the use of an image or representation of a god/ess. I don't believe. But thank you very much.

nonononononono... I have been practicing hoodoo, I want to learn more about this kind of witchcraft though, and some spells require an altar, but i want to make one that doesn't involve a god/ess of sorts.

My altar doesn't involve a god/goddess. As I stated before - you can place what you want on your altar, it is for you after all.
