Postby [Kate] » Thu Nov 23, 2006 9:54 am

For anyone celebrating thanksgiving today I just wanted to say Happy Gobble Gobble day, as I called it when I was little.

Huh?

Oh yeah... Americans! We had Thanksgiving over a month ago. Happy Thanksgiving! No matter when it is, the point is the same.

would you mind telling me when this took place(either in canada or america i dont care which). and most importantly what the point is since we australians dont do it.i tried to look it up but all i got was a few recipes and such and i doubt that has any bearing.

Well, happy belated Turkey to you too :)

I made blue mashed potatoes (yes, blue; the potatoes are purple and oxidize to blue when cooked), and they were a hit at the table. Tasted awesome, too.

Anyone else make anything interesting?

I've heard those purple potatoes are supremely good for you. Do they taste good/ cook well also?

We had turkey, salmon (for the ones that can't eat turkey), brussel sprouts, lots of pumpkin pie...mmm pie...

And family.

They're good for you, because they contain the same antioxidant that gives blueberries their color (I'm a produce clerk, so I know this stuff, hehe). But a potato is a potato and they are starchy.
But they cook wonderfully, provided you don't over-mash: then they become glue-y. Better "smashed" than "mashed," in other words. They have a stronger, nuttier taste, too. Good stuff.

And I love salmon. And brussel sprouts. yum.

Antioxidants battle cancer, Sobek. But you're right, there always seems to be a new 'this is an evil food that causes disease' as well as a new 'miracle cure that is right in your kitchen!'.

Cancer is (often) caused by free radicals, a by-products of certain processes and such. Antioxidants fight these.

Hey guys! Yes, Happy belated Turkey Day! I had a lot of fun and ate a lot. Turkey, potatoes, fish, rice, casserole (sp?) and I can't remember anything else. But I'm bacj after taking some much, much needed time off from the world.

i dont really care what gives a person cancer and what doesnt, so long as it was enjoyable while i was eating it, it would be worth it.

I know. Just edumacating ya!
There's a lot of things that people eat for thanksgiving. One of the reasons why you see so many people from around here eating the same kinds of food is that they are often feeding a large number of people - the whole family! So you want food that is cheap and can cover a lot of plates. Turkey and potatoes, for example, fall in that category - except maybe those funky purple potatoes.
