Santa Claus

Postby JamesDean » Sun Dec 17, 2006 6:14 pm

Since it is near Christmas time, I thought this would be a silly but fun topic to debate.

Of course Christmas is a Christian holiday. And the fictional Santa Claus is very much tied up in Christmas. Many Christian parents tell there kids about Santa Claus and the whole story of him, etc.

Some of the most common questions from kids are how her gets around the world in one night, how he gets the reindeer to fly, etc. The most common answer, in my experience, is magic.

So if the Bible pretty much says magic is evil/a sin/whatever you want to call it, how come some Christian parents are teaching their kids about a magical being?

You might be better off asking Christians these kinds of questions.

Exactly. I'm definately not Christian. Even when I was one, though, I didn't really associate Santa with Christianity.

I think it's sad that when we are kids we have more fun believing in things that aren't real, like Santa Clause. When we get older all that gets taken away :(

(sorry to move off topic)

but i agree, you should probably ask christians that.

There's so much about Christianity that's dichotomous and hypocritical. I like the original story about the Bishop of Myra[?] not sure if that's the right town or spelling! The good man who helped the unfortunate,in secret. That is the origin of the Santa story. I believe he was called Nicolas, and it got turned into Santa[ saint] Claus [ Nicolas] if this is wrong or an urban legend then excuse me, but I like the story, anyway. I think there are many interesting stories which have come from old ways and legends, that have been incorporated into Christianity- usually through Saints lives. Another one I like is St. Helen's, and the early stories of the Celtic church Saints, full of druidry and magic.
