My Patron and my Madness, will they work together?

Postby Wolf* » Thu May 17, 2007 12:58 pm

This is sort of an off-shoot of another thread I made a while back. As most of you may know, I follow Odin. But also, magically, I am a Chaote. This puts me at a conflict. Because I really love working with the Cthulhu Mythos, but my first and greatest devotion goes to Odin. Most other Heathens would bitch me out to no end if they heard this, but its not them that I particularly worry about, its the old man himself. Has anyone worked with the Allfather enough to know the attitude he takes on these things? I'm stuck between a god of battle madness, inspiration, and the berserk, and between gods that are known to cause insanity by a mere glance at them.

I look at it in the WWOD? What would Odin do? He is afterall a god of magic. Though most heathens are strongly against practicing anything other than pure "norse magic" such as runes and galdr, is that what Odin wants? Or would this God of Knowledge want his followers to learn all the ways they can?

So, as my sig says, "Can I play with madness?", or will this eldritch mix of magics be my downfall?

I think you know what I 'm going to say,Wolf.Read over what you said, Odin and Chaos go hand in hand, berserkers and chaos go hand in hand,
Odin was unafraid to take chances and try new things - hence him being the first Seidr man.Odin played with madness -9 years of searching leading to 9 days and nights of it,in particular,Shamanism is madness, that's why it works, paradoxically. My take on this anyway.

I have a link for you to look at,Raven Kaldera, read all the pages in Northern Shamanism and the pathwalker's guide, make up your own mind,I don't agree with everything but a lot of it is excellent.[ The whole site has a lot of content, some is associated with BDSM -a warning for the young uns and those offended by such matters] Raven is Ergi and is an activist for transgender rights etc., Seidr is a kind of madness, the things you see in trance and the places you go are not for the soft hearted,Odin drives his children to madness for it is there that true strength is found, in a predatory spirituality, which may sound like another paradox - the ordeal path. He explains physical ordeals but there are spiritual ordeals also, the path of the spiritual warrior.I don't have a link for that right now, tho'. How does this link to Chaos? I think it's obvious, thinking outside the box,in paradoxes and opposing paradigms,is Odinic in the truest sense.Hey,my user name means Heretic, after all. I would say this. I believe it. I walk many roads, twisting and turning, but they all lead me back to and converge at the one place,at the roots of Yggdrasil.

Remember that Odin and Loki are brothers. Is not Loki crazy?
The wolf-shirts prayed to Odin.

My two cents. :-)

I love Iron Maiden.

I agree with Eretik. I'm hardly well-versed in your religion, but I imagine that Odin would hardly be against someone taking chances with their sanity if it was on the journey for something great. Needless (stupid) chances I doubt he'd respect, but that's up to your own intentions. Also, if you're really interested in possibly losing your sanity, why don't you try finding him and seeing if he has something in mind? That would probably be an adventure and a half, just don't do it lightly... though you already know that.

Well, I've actually met Raven Caldera. He's a patron of Freaks of all flavors and a student of mine is one of his as well, so I'm rather familiar. :-)

Raven is a shaman, and very controversial among the Nordic pagans.
Of course, I think that most of those who dislike Raven to be full of it, but you should know that going to a Thing might be complicated. :-)

In fact, the whole Cthulu mythos and Nordic stuff together fits in perfectly out there, since they don't limit their perceptions of the spirit world to that which is trendy. :-D The spirit world is a very complex and made up of nearly infinite variety... anything you imagine can (and WILL) *BE* there.

Many of the gatherings they have at Cauldron Farms are tailored around appreciating the energies of those of alternative gender, so they are radically different from your ANSI standard Wiccan gathering. And, in case you haven't noticed, they are WAY NOT fluffy. If you are interested in going (their Samhain is especially wonderful!) PM me. I can talk to some people and get you talking to someone who could be your native guide. :-)

I wasn't sure about gender, so I kinda just made a guess there =P

Jcrow: I might get back to you on that, but it would be at least another year before I could do something of that nature, when I turn 18 and my parents can't prohibit me from doing such :?

It's ok. Raven is of the Third gender, so guessing is hazardous. Since Raven presents zer self as a male, that's the right one. :-)

Don't you hate being a mature teen? I sure did. :-/ Seems like you have to wait until your life is over to do anything interesting. :-(

Please don't give up. That way, you'll be paying attention when opportunities come your way.

I'm sure you hear stupid stuff like that from "real" adults all the time.
