I did a research paper for my english class a couple of years ago. I was fortunate enough that I knew people who have actually had these experiences. My husband was 5 years old when he had his. he was pulled from a pool and was not breathing. He remembers the experience as clearly as if it happened yesterday. Dee a friend of my grandmother had hers in the operating room. She had flatlined. The one thing these two people have in common is that they are not afraid to die. I was wondering if anyone else has had one and if they would like to share their experience. I know science tell us it can be explained by lack of oxygen or the brain shutting down. I know these people and I don't buy it. Just thought this might add some life to this section.

I'm lucky enough to NOT have had one, but I know multiple people who have. Their stories are all similar but definately personalized. Most of them describe something like you, Hedge, where it feels very comforting. One of my friends has had... bad luck I guess you could say. She's nearly died 6 times during the course of a certain recovery and she kept being told "Not yet..."
My boyfriend drowned when he was little and was pronounced dead on the scene...the revived him a few minutes later....he's told me this story a few times and he said that he didnt feel anything or see anything that he remembers....So I'm not really sure how I feel about near death experiences....I guess I'd have to see for myself! Stories I've heard are very interesting to me though.....and worth looking into

Experiments have been done on this subject to try to 'recreate' a near death experience. Doctors and scientists have tonnes of information about the different patterns going on in your brain when you die (magnetism, electricity, hormones etc) and they've altered people's brain patterns to emulate these ones and see what happens. Religion or not most people who volunteered for this have had similar experiences (though some more disconcerting than others... one lady said it felt like her leg was being stretched up the wall and across the ceiling!).I think people only have near death experiences if they believe in it, and God, in my opinion. I think that should you not believe in it then you simply feel nothingness. Thats just my opinion anyway
So it's my opinion that WHAT you see or hear may have a lot to do with your religion, but almost everyone is capable of experiencing SOMETHING. It's like the idea that guardian angels, ghosts, etc, are really just an extension of your own higher self than a separate deity. When you die (or nearly die) you're put into a frame of mind that allows you to access certain memories, sensations and dimensions that you normally wouldn't be able to.
