Ok. More recommendations!

Garth Nix... the Abhorsen series. (Starts with "Sabriel") This stuff is seriously good. It is written for children but is good enough for adults... and isn't even as kiddie-like as the Harry Potter series. Anything by this author is *wonderful*. And he's an Aussie! Necromancy for kids! Hooray!

I've mentioned this stuff before elsewhere, but I figure I should put it here, too....

The "Dark is Rising" series by Susan Cooper. This was the first "witchy" fiction I ever read... before I became a witch/whatever. ;-)
Great stuff. I may have to buy it again just so I can re-read it.

"So you want to be a Wizard" series, by Dianne Duane. I have some reservations about the "Book of Night with Moon" chapter in this series, since she vilified some good people, and knighted some historical villians.
(E. A. Budge was NOT a nice man. He was NOT a good archeologist. I could rant forever on this topic... sorry)

"Time Cat" by Lloyd Alexander. I admit, I have a soft spot in my heart for this book. It's an old classic from my childhood.

"The Sea Priestess"*, "Moon Magic" (sequel), "The Goatfoot God" "Demon Lover" "The Tales of Dr. Taverner"* are all good magickal fictional reads.

The starred ones are my favorites.

Oh, yeah, and I'm reading The Urban Shaman (A.K.A 'The Walker Papers') series by C. E. Murphy. High wierdness and high entertainment.
The first one is, predictably enough 'The Urban Shaman'.

I'm still kind of pissed at her (CE Murphy) for taking my idea (shaman/cop) and publishing before I did. Grrr.

OTOH, I should be cursing the name of The Sentinel too, I suppose. Sigh.
Carole endures. Sorta like The Dude.

I read Sabriel and then could not find any of the sequels around here. The first one, from what I remember, was really awesome. I thought it was a very good book and I think I shall go back and read it again.

What are the names of the sequels?

These books ROCK.

I am extremely dismayed at how the movie is looking to be shaping up.

Personally, I can't stand Marion Zimmer Bradley. I've only read the Firebrand, which has GOT to be the worst retelling of the Cassandra myth that I've ever read. It didn't even really make sense.

Kelly Armstrong's books are plenty of fun. Pure modern supernatural witch/werewolf/warlock/wizard/haunting fantasy.

Jacqueline Carey's books have some very definite pagan elements to them. I highly recommend.

Some people like Trudy Cavanan's Age of Five books....though I personally only read the first one and wasn't too engaged, so it took me weeks to do so though I know others who love them.

Wolfheart: My sweetie found the Abhorsen series on-line. Amazon, I think.

The second one is called "Lirael" and the last one is called "Abhorsen". There's another two books in the series that are coming out in 2010 and 2011 from what Garth says on Amazon. Wheee!

Oh, I forgot to mention Emma Bulls "War for the Oaks". That's a modern fantasy about faries. But seriously, it's gritty and fun. Pookas are serious business.

LaFiamma: I'm sorry to hear that the movie is going to suck. I would LOVE to see a movie done by Peter Jackson or maybe some dark surrealist of cinema.

OMG Garth Nix Rocks, Lirael is by far my fav of the three, the details about magic practices are so detailed its chilling that the guy isnt Pagan or a Witch. (or is he? hmm, i'll have to check that out, he wasnt the last time I looked :D ).

And good news guys there's a mini forth book in the series called Over The Wall. Gotta read it.
