I saw it in a semi-dream. Dunno if it is a pre-existing symbol or a combination of a few. Either way i can't find it on the internet :/ is probably something really simple I'm overlooking.
It was carved onto a tree in a wood ...

Does anybody know what this symbol is?

Hmm, interesting symbol. Where did you see it? (what state/country) and on what kind of tree? (if you know) ... I think having that kind of information will help identify the symbol-- there are petroglyphs, hieroglyphics (though those are generally more detailed than this symbol is, so I'm thinking it's a petroglyph)... there are even several towns that were more or less "famous" for carving things into their trees... could be any of these, or something else entirely.
I can't help with any identification yet, but I'll try to help you search for the answer too- I'm curious now as well. :28: There are a lot of different places and directions to look, I think if the location of the glyph is at least known, that will help a lot in identifying it.

Hmmm, well this identification is definitely made harder by having the image come to you in a semi-dream/meditative state... there aren't any trees there that belong in any particular geographic area.
I'll keep my eyes open... but I'd suggest looking into the different types of petroglyphs that exist to get a possible direction. The art in itself looks like it may have some affiliation with the petroglyphs drawn/carved into rocks. (I live up in the high desert of California where there are quite a few rocks remaining with petroglyphs in them. Very cool stuff!)
Happy hunting... I'll let you know if I find anything! :28:

Yeah, I was thinking that it looks kind of human-like as well. Hmmm... I couldn't say anything for certain. I was planning on hitting up the Library pretty soon, so I'll take a peek where I can and try to keep an eye out for you though. ^^
I'm interested in what it could be now.
I'm interested in what it could be now.

Eternity begins, and ends, with the ocean's tides.
From reading everyone's responses, it appears to be a kind of 'three blind men feeling an elephant' situation...
One feels the tail, says it's a rope, ect. ect.
Perhaps you should look at it, interpret it in your own mind, and think about what it could mean personally, to you.
Only you can say where you are spiritually, emotionally and physically.
Hope I helped.

This was my exact thought, when I saw this. A road or path, leading toward the setting (or rising) sun.I think it looks like a road leading toward the horizon where the sun is hovering about to set or about to rise. Or maybe the moon. I sort of thought a person at first too but I am totally seeing the road now.
