Well i've seen Spirits plain as day since i was a little girl, and i've never seen an aura on one... but yes i have always viewed the aura as someones life force... so i'm guessing life is a prerequisite to having one?

But *why* is life a requisite for an aura?
Perhaps that holds the key for the difference between this life and the next...
I used to be able to see one spirit when i was young, i called him my imaginary friend but he wasnt imaginary. It's a shame i cant remember it

Perhaps your aura is spirit energy, and thus a spirit is entirely that energy and would appear to have no aura.

Well if an aura is your LIFE force, than life would for obvious reasons BE a requisite....
But i dont know, i could be wrong... i can tell a patients state of health from their aura, so this suggests to me it would be an indication of someones life force.
