Juniperberry:
I was thinking of shadow magic. I feel that I somehow embodied the things that I normally repress. This is why I thought it was interesting that you were fearful, because you actually seem like a very confident person who is not afraid of confrontation or the ugliness of truth and the physical world. And our descriptions of the lunar eclipse seemed uncharacteristic for both of us (from the little that I know of each of us.)
It is possible that the full moon was effecting my emotions--I usually enjoy the rush of the full moon, so if the eclipse is an amplification of that energy, it makes sense that I would further enjoy it.
What have you been baking all day?

I don't do much in shadow magic. Heathens sort of make sure everything is out there and that one is as honest and truthful as possible. Honestly, can you imagine vikings sitting around a fire wondering if they have repressed emotions? (Huge, HUGE, grin at that image.) You deal with things head-on. If you feel like crap, you figure out why, you deal with it as bravely and as immediately as possible. No psychoanalysis, no blaming others. Full accountability, responsibility and action.

Which is why the fact that I'm afraid of the dark is sort of sad. I also can't imagine my ancestors needing a night light. But they were aware of things out there, of dark forces, and they appeased these and avoided them as much as possible. The spirit realm is a whole different animal then another warrior yelling in your face with an axe. And I, too, would be much braver facing a human adversary then a spiritual one. It's not robbers or rapists I'm afraid of at night. This sort of enemy, the spiritual kind, the kind you can't confront is part of why heathen men didn't appreciate magic. Women were a highly appreciated sex because of their intuition, and their shamantic abilities and they're stengths and talents in that sense of being able to work with the spirit world...but men who practiced in the art of seidhr or spae were considered ergi. It was unbecoming of a man to deal with things through manipulation, or gossip, anything that wasn't face to face and open and honest.

What haven't I been baking? Let's see: Lemon bars, snickerdoodles, sugar cookies, nut bread, apple coffee cake, pumpkin pie, peanut butter fudge, chocolate fudge, chocolate revel bars...I think that's it. The nut bread and apple bread is in honor of the Aesir (they love their apples) and I made a boar-shaped sugar cookie specifically for Frey. Tonight I'll be leaving some oats out for Sleipnir, and sharing some of everything with the ancestors and wights.

Edit: (Jesus Christ. It's late, I'm tired and so I'm editing my posts like crazy tonight.) I just want to clarify that I don't see anything wrong with shadow work. But I'm a heathen reconstructionist and therefore trying to rebuild the truths they had that worked for them. Several other paths use shadow work to find the truths that that tradition has that works for them and it''s completely valid, successful and respectable. But the heathen worldview doesn't include it and so it isn't a heathen truth or gateway to the gods.
The Gods we worship write their names on our faces; be sure of that. A person will worship something, have no doubt about that. We may think our tribute is paid in secret in the dark recesses of our hearts, but it will out. That which dominates our imaginations and our thoughts will determine our lives, and our character. Therefore, it behooves us to be careful what we worship, for what we are worshipping we are becoming.

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

As believers in the folk-religion we are studying, we seek after mysteries that expand the scope of our gods and our understanding of them, not reductionist theories that reduce them to manageable and socially productive "functions".

Would anyone be able to tell me what Shadow Magick is? It sounds like Necromancy to bo honest. No offense intended. :)
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping
than you can understand.

The Shadow magic that I was talking about about is from my reading of another board member's post in the Witchcraft School section of the website. I believe it is associated with Jungian philosophy and has nothing to do with necromancy. I think, although I am no expert, that the "Shadow" refers to a part of the subconscious that contains and embodies various repressed feelings and ideas.
Juniperberry: I love your image of the Vikings working on their repressed feelings--it made me laugh. I don't think its too wimpy to fear darkness. We humans are predominately visually oriented. We aren't nocturnal, and it is a good survival instinct for us to avoid things that make noises in the dark. Sure we managed to kill off of most of our natural predators--but we haven't always been on the top of the food chain. Thanks for sharing your beliefs! They are really interesting.
