Coincidence is something that crosses everyones mind, especially when dealling with things as obscure as magick and faith, the only real guideline you have is what you believe yourself and what you see for yourself. I didn't believe people could create a storm out of nothing, I've seen it done and now I believe it. I didn't believe in ghosts till me and my niece saw the same one and discribed it to each other.
Experience is your main guideline and for people who haven't seen it or experienced it it will sound like you're mad.
I have one of the two greater seals of Solomon laying around but I agree with you, the rituals sound scary and complicated and for obscure means. Not to mention I don't believe in demons.
And yes there are a lot of views out there, which happens because everybody experiences it differently, not to mention the people who didn't experience anything and decided to make something up to look good in front of their friends.
The fact is there is not one way of going about ritual, much like there is not one good way of percieving or experiencing a diety.
I know people whose experience was very personal, like a parent, others who experienced it as an authority figure and others that don't at all yet are satisfied in 'believing' their there.
There are people who use the Celtic methods and people who use Shamanic methods or Nordic or Roman or Egyptian even.
Most people work with what they know or have been drawn to all their lives. Others look back at where their roots lead them. I think that the mother or the goddess comes in many forms in many religions. That all the goddesses of all religions all come back to her, not a lot of people will agree with me on this but that's allright
I think that if neo-paganism didn't 'work' than not so many people would flock to it, but again, it's all in your perception, if you don't believe it will work than it won't. Many neo pagans say they adapted what little is known from the old times to fit their modern lives and situations. Since most of the old paganism magick was based on things they had to deal with daily in the anchient times but not so much in these days. Gods to work the land, gods to hunt the woods, gods to keep the hearth alive etc. Hardly anybody grows their own food or depends on their hearth being on 24/7 and so people adapt. The goddess of the hunt becomes the goddess of wild animals, or she is not called upon at all.
There are lots of people that don't know that most the pagan festivals are of celtic origin or even have any connection with the celtic gods, some of whom are pagan themselves. Try mentioning the name Tailtiu when people are talking about Lughnasadh, hardly anybody will know who she is or what she stands for. This has to do with how much studying people will do, Gerald Gardner (who made wiccan what it is today and is usually the first name to pop up for anyone interested in neo-paganism) states the year and a day study period when really you're never done learning. I'm learning from you now and tomorrow I'll learn something else.
"I guess this goes back to my original question how do you successfully do a ritual that is going to work, be respectful to the gods and again actually work and use the right methods??"
I hate to say it, but it all depends on your definition of right, for a Shaman it'll be different than a Kelt and for you it might be different from me.
Let go of the idea that there is a right or a wrong way of doing these things. Maybe let the concept of ritual go and concider your own faith. Maybe it will
show you where your path leads. In divination alone there are 60 different ways and so many people who believe that they know which one is the correct one. Feel for yourself, Scott Cunningham wrote that you should look at all knowlidge with a questioning eye to learn the truth that lies inside. Look at your books and take notes what do you believe? What makes sense to you? What is most interesting for you?
Maybe you'll take one look at the celtic pantheon and forms of worship and decide you found the one truth for you or you decide that not everything fits who you are but most of it does and in your studies you find that you like the way of Nordic worship as well, see what fits you. Does prayer work for you, or chanting, do candles work, or bonfires, tap water, ocean water etc etc
My interaction with the goddess was simple and sweet, I was standing in water and she appeared from the water and embraced me and before I had a chance to say anything she said not to worry because she had always been there and always would be. That was the clearest vision I had ever had and that was because I asked for it, maybe, had I been of a different pantheon she would have appeared to me in the form of a specific goddess, perhaps if I had needed a harsh talking to she would not have appeared as friendly, who knows? Only experience will tell me.
Forget what people tell you as 'not possible' concider that everything is possible and realise that only you can find your own truth. From what I can tell from your experiences is that you have faith in your abilities and I believe you but if I hadn't would that have made yourr abilities any less real? I don't think so, so how does how people explain something to be correct mean that they are right. "Yes but their ecxperience has taught them!" Yes well they, are not you,and so they might not have the same beliefs as you do or the same experience as you do.
Have faith in yourself and do as your heart tells you, if you believe in the gods than decide if your fear of their wrath is a good guideline to go by (I mean it worked so well for the christians
BTW I am love seeing that you commented, I actually love this talk, and I love to hear about your experiences, very interesting <3
