You can do both.
Anything with a code can be scanned.
If it doesn't recognize what you're trying to scan you can enter it manually.
It saves everything you put in it under the recent and frequent tabs. There's a search tool to help you find it easier.
I'm vegan and hardly eat anything prepackaged. But a lot of the things I buy (Potatoes, rice, almond milk, fruit, broth, veggies, seasonings, etc) come with some kind of barcode. If it doesn't have a barcode you could probably find it by searching for it.
Once you enter something one time, it's there to use anytime.
It has the nutritional info for everything on the app already and you can even input serving sizes and what not.
