My question is: are YOU truly okay with the idea of going through your entire life having only had sex with one person? Because I don't think I would have been. I'm certainly not promiscuous and I've never cheated on anyone, but I don't know if I'd be able to say that if I had married the first person I ever had sex with.
Maybe he's just trying to be really honest with you and maybe you should do the same. Try to get past what you think society demands and see if you can figure out how you REALLY feel about it.
ETA: Although I don't know that I think a single experience would make that much difference. It sounds to me as though perhaps you both are pretty young and inexperienced to be contemplating marriage.
