I have seen it. He eats nothing but McDonalds and he eats it 3 times a day... That is a bit extreme. I know the point is that it is extremely unhealthy for you but, not many people eat nothing but McDonalds and eat it 3 times a day and take it that far. I think if you eat fast food like once a month you should be ok.

On the contrary.. I've had friends who've worked in such 'fine' fast food establishments.. And they regularly see the same people coming in up to and beyond three times a day :).

Some people just have money to burn.. Or lack common sense.. Or are lazy and can't be bothered to cook..

Fast fod is certainly a big contributer to obesity, but I fail to see how fast food and genetics connect.
It is as simple as people who genetically have a slower metabolism (unfortunately I am one so its a 15km run every am), get fat because the lifestyle they choose.

Now as this trend becomes more apparent, and obesity is more commonplace you will have people with slow metabolism breeding together, they will have a majority of children with slow metabolism (inherited from parents), who will then breed together and in turn have children with slow metabolism and so on...that is how it affects the gene pool...thats not to say that there will not be any throwbacks, but the incidence of the children being born with slow metabolisms will be higher.

I absulutly hate fast food, its evil to me. I try and atlet cook once a day usaly dinner. It isnt always "healthy" ( i say it like that because i know of 100 ways to make it healthyer ) food, but its way way better than fast food.

Isnt there ways to fasen your matabilisum? I have herd stuff like eating 5 small meals makes your matabalisum go faster...i have also herd it can just end up makeing you more fat. I dont have a fast matabulisum either nore dose my fionce, but i whouldnt say we are fat, we work out....kinda...and eat good. Not the healthyest of food but its still good.

As a martial arts athelete I eat seven times a day. It doesnt affect your metabolisms speed, it just means that there really isnt any excess food laying about in your stomach.

The seven meals are equal to three square just in smaller portions so it is easier to digest and burn.

I also drink 1/2 to a litre of water before each meal.

I need to drink much more water than i do, but rusty old pipe water dosnt tast to great, so i usaly make kool-aid or lemonaid, and when i do i will drink a 4 quart amount in a fue hours, but i know that much surger isnt healthy.
Also lactoseintolerat so i cant drink milk, i can have cheese but i dont have plain milk. So really i need to drink way more liquieds than i do. I also dont drink soft drinks, usaly.

You're pitting one factor against another there. Not sure I'd call that a genetic/fast food link

A person with higher metabolism leading a sedentary life and eating tons of fast food is also going to put on more weight...maybe not as quickly or as much as the person with a slower matabolism, but in many cases it's going to catch up eventually.

Now, a slower metabolism tends to run in my family. I've got it too. i'm not deathly obese, but gee, I could stand to lose a bit of me. Good thng I don't tend to gain weight really- I've been about the same weight, within 5-10 pounds for about 10 years now. When I was playing tennis in high school for 5-6 hours a day five days a week and working on my feet all weekend, I might have been about 20 pounds lighter and I still was heavier than I should be.

I wouldn't say it's my current lifestyle either. For starters, I don't have a car. Have never had one. I walk everywhere, sometimes 9 or 10 miles in a given day (It's a lot more efficient in this city, it only costs as much as my shoes and socks and yeah, it's good excercise) I also do a lot of dancing- bellydancing and some other stuff too. I eat decently. Meat maybe 3-4 times a week, whole grains, lots of (fresh) vegetables and fruit, all that good stuff.

Yeah, I'd be in much worse shape if i drove everywhere and ate tons of fast food...but that wouldn't really be my genetics.

Genetics do play a factor, as does environment.

Dr. Jeffrey M. Friedman discovered leptin in 1993 I believe, and he was a brilliant geneticist perhaps a little research into his work would help you clear out the misconception.

The above link shows some interesting facts about the Ob gene and the studies done on twins etc.

http://healthlink.mcw.edu/article/979064416.html

Information on the genetic of obesity were published in the Dec. 19, 2000 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science by Ahmed Kissebah, MD, Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Clinical Nutrition at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

At the end of the day, it is what you choose to believe, I believe facts and these are the ones presented to date.

However surely I will concede that not everything is know about the genetics but to date the evidence is pointing towards genetics playing a major role in obesity.

I don't dispute that genetics play a factor- I provided my own family as an example. But that there is any more connection between genetics and fast food than genetics and any other external contributing factor, that I dispute.

Ah, perhaps a little miscommuniacation, sorry english is not my first language.

There are no direct links, but fast food was an example of an external factor that causes the gene to be sucessful.

For example, people with dark pigmentation genes suceed better in hot places, like the desert, because dark skin is less likely to develop skin cancer.

The strength of the sun was the external factor, that allowed those with a particular gene to suceed.

I hope that clears up what I was trying to get at.

yes, i too pray to the God of fast food. he is of Greek origin, goes by many names and is most commonly known as oilyfoodicus(!)
