I will try to explain this, first a black shadow can be anything! a spirit that tries to contact you! or just a dream, you know? the only one that knows the answer is you...

Roar eh? That can be scary. When I began to open up my awareness I was in the same place sans the roar. I would wake up to find color's shapes, blobs, figures, and even one time floating dna, right in my face. It took me a while to not instinctively freak out and bat it away with my hands.
This happens because when you are sleeping you are in a meditative like state, thus are more open to perceive things of this nature. Wen you first wake up you are still in this half asleep like state, thus it is easy to see things.
While it may seem scary I doubt it is anything with negative intentions. I wouldn't be surprised if it was one of your guides. However you should set up protection just in case and just to help ease your mind.
The significance of the roar might have been to jolt you awake so that you would remember or not fallback asleep.

There is a thread floating around about screams and shouts waking people up, it might help to find and read that, see if it applies to you too.

Since you specify that this happened around three in the morning, I also would consider sleep paralysis. Sometimes people call them night terrors. It's common for those to happen around that time.
