Has anyone here gone to a Naturopath?

Postby LovelyLeo » Sat Feb 19, 2011 11:27 pm

I've been thinking about it, but I'm not so sure what to expect, i.e. expense and how much help I can expect to get? I have been to regular doctors quite a few times and think what I have (ibs) might be helped by a more natural approch. Or at least maybe get to the cause? Anyone have any advice? :?

Naturopaths could help a lot, herbs are the predecessors of modern medicine, so I wouldn't find anything bad about it.

Before going, try a tea of a blend of a couple of these herbs 3 times a day and see if you see any difference:
Peppermint, Fennel, Ginger, Chamomile, Caraway, Anise, and Oregano

Okay thanks! I was thinking maybe a naturopath could get to the root of this illness and maybe it would go away? I'll have to try those herbs. :)

Definatly. Generally speaking, modern medicine is good for acute conditions and therefore their treatments tend to be overreactions for chronic conditions. I've known people whom have had dibilitating chronic conditions that were not solved by modern medicine but turned out to have dietry cures. The jury is still out for things like Homeopathy for me though.

Yes I have been on many consultations with naturopaths over the years and prefer to go and see them before going to consult a medical doctor..... actually I started studying naturopathy myself last year but still have a long way to go yet before graduation.

Having said that, I do know that Coeliac Disease is sometimes misdiagnosed as IBS. >> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coeliac_disease

I went to one some years ago when my metabolism was way out of whack. He was immensely helpful and got me back on track by changing my diet and using vitamins. I learned a lot about my body and energy in the process. I highly recommend seeing one.

I'm starting to think I should have gone to one first. Tomorrow I might just call and make an appointment. I have been tested for celiacs and it was negative. I haven't been to the gastrointesinologist yet though-I don't have insurance so I'm waiting on that. Studying to be a naturopath sounds like it takes a lot of schooling, how long do you go for? I almost want to go for that, but I'm no good at science. :) Thanks for the info. and good luck in school!

I might just have to see one. Glad they were of help to you. How much did it cost? If you don't mind my asking?

Ah, I didn't have to pay as he was a friend of my roommate at the time. You should get a consult for free, I would think.

Oh, well I guess I'll just have to call and ask. That would be nice if I could...

You're most welcome and thank you! (although I'm taking a break from study atm to sort out some domestic stuff).

Yes, there is a fair amount of schooling, anywhere between 3-4 years full-time study, more to complete the doctorate which is what I want to achieve eventually. :D

Good luck again with finding a solution and healing.

Ahh, I wish they had people like that in my area.

Though, I can't say I've heard the term naturopath before. It's reminding me of something else that sounds similar... I keep thinking herbology, but I assume it encompasses more than that?

Yeah, I was surprised to find one anywhere near me. Yes, I think they're more of a regular MD with special schooling in more natural areas of medicine.
