The Ordeal
Open the curtains, No!
Shut! The light’s too bright.
Her, there, that’s the one.
The curious one, the naïve one.
She searches but she doesn’t see.
She cries to the moon, to the sun, the stars, earth, cosmos.
And begs for a thing she doesn’t understand, that foolish girl.
She can feel it dancing on the tip of her tongue,
Taunting, she taunts back,
And in doing so, finds she has won what
She had asked for.
Now she understands.
Drip, tears drop.
Guilt floods her body, saturating everything in its dark hue.
Heart, eyes, energy, dark, so dark.
Please! Open the curtains! Oh it’s so dark.
She can’t reach them anymore.
She’s fallen into a well, no light can reach her anymore.
There, in that well, the blackness is so velvety black, every sensation,
Amplified. Memories of the sun are all she has.
Suddenly, pleasantly, determination and strength erupt with a great
Bang. She stands up and begins to climb.
Drip, sweat drops.
Her muscles scream,
The darkness beckons,
Demanding her return.
She won’t, she can see the sun!
She climbs up and out.
She is free.
She takes the sun into her mouth,
Swallows. That is where she will keep it. Safe,
Inside, so the darkness cannot reach her.
She has emerged victorious.
Drip, tears drop.
Open the curtains, No!
