Invoking

Postby Bstnactrs » Tue Mar 14, 2006 12:12 pm

Just wondering if any of you invoke Gods / Goddesses specifically for help or assistance and how exactly, you personally go about doing that? Is there a specific ritual you perform, do you just say a kind of prayer? Is it in general or, to a specific God / Goddess? Also, how do you thank them?

How do you mean, like...

-- Invoking diety to your pressence?

--Invoking them into you?

-- there is a whole host of things that this could fall under

I guess I am asking what others do - personally, I am just looking to invoke them for their assistance.

I've never invoked a god/dess, but I have invoked spiritual guides/familiars that I've met. For a god I assume its the same? Just call on htem asking for their pressense. If they come, you'll feel it. You wll be guided by emotions and such more than actual words, they may show you images, or they might talk to you mentally, it varies greatly.

Yes, that is exactly what I have been doing. And I do feel something - although it took a few days.

I was just wondering what others did, if anything...just a kind "share your story" kind of thing.

A couple of other ideas you may want to try that are really common are
" I align myslef with _____" and repeat several times or
you can meditate and repeat their name over and over until you feel there presence, this is where you get more of an "answer" from them.
You can do rhyming things like " on this night, in this hour, I call upon the power of ____", or " I invoke the power of ____ ", "God/Goddess ___ hear my plea, etc. etc. Usually after you do this you repeat their name in your spell somewhere.
Another one "I (your name) am (diety) incarnate". That draws more of their presence in you. Make sure you thank the diety as well when you are done. I have found that different spirits, deities, guides, like different ways of being invoked. I think they are more likely to aid you when you build a relationship w/ them, rather than just repeating their name because you read it in a spell somewhere. Hope I've been some help.

It honestly depends on which deity I am trying to invoke. I tend to cater to the deity's tastes in worship. For instance, Eris is generally only invoked by Discordians and thus, it is pretty laid back between us. Calling on her and talking to her casually is fine (in fact we even insult each other playfully at times). Other deities like demons (whom I invoke for the sake of following the Satanic and demonaltrist model), I tend to have rituals for.

GenevieveDawn: Actually, I have done most of that - although, I am not invoking because I saw it in a spell...it was actually something I chose to do on my own...in terms of building a relationship, should I just keep doing these things maybe once a day / night? Is there a dedication ritual you can do for this purpose? I do not want to just invoke for help & then forget about her - I truly believe in connecting & establishing a relationship long-term.

fatalism: Eris is actually one of the dieties I was researching (among others)...can you tell me a little bit about you how developed your relationship with her - did you just start talking to her? & possibly give me some resources on discordianism? PM me - I'd like to discuss this more with you if it is ok.

Thanks for the input everyone! It seems I am on the right track!

It sounds like your on the right track then. I don't think you need to do it everday to establish a good connection. I do it when I feel the need. Meditating until I reach the point that I can communicate with a Goddess is not alot of work, I just try not to "bother" them too much I suppose. I wasn't assuming you did anything because of wording in a spell, I just try to add things like that in my posts for all of the newbies who may be reading. They tend to wonder why their spells don't work sometimes, so I hope I didn't offend you.

I agree with this. I might say a prayer with an offering to Apollo, but with Eris, I would do something silly and burn hot dog buns.

Hot dog buns huh? Really? I love it! And how did she react to that?

That's something I haven't done yet, but if I had, she'd probably say "Up yours, Zeus!" and continue to instruct me to eat pork every Friday.

If I remember correctly, she would take it as a good offering as a rememberence of the Great Snub or something of the sort

"A Discordian shall Partake of No Hot Dog Buns, for Such was the Solace of Our Goddess when She was Confronted with The Original Snub."

The Original Snub being when she was denied an invitation to the party in which all the other gods were invited to. In response she caused the first war among men.

"A Discordian is Required during his early Illumination to Go Off Alone & Partake Joyously of a Hot Dog on a Friday; this Devotive Ceremony to Remonstrate against the popular Paganisms of the Day: of Catholic Christendom (no meat on Friday), of Judaism (no meat of Pork), of Hindic Peoples (no meat of Beef), of Buddhists (no meat of animal), and of Discordians (no Hot Dog Buns)."
