Have you tried looking on ebay? Sometimes they have all kinds of things like that. Here are some other sites I found that sell alters and other items.

I buy a lot of magical supplies off of ebay because 1) it's cheap and 2) they offer an interesting selection. Also they take paypal, which a lot of my money is in because of webdesign commissions that I take.

Have you thought of buying/using a standard end table or nightstand and just turning it into an altar? I use an empty fireplace for my altar. Using something that isn't already labelled as magical is usually cheaper and it probably won't change anything.

Push comes to shove, you could always set up on the floor. I do most of my rituals sitting on a pillow in front of an altar cloth, right on the floor. It's a decent alternative when you have as little space and means as I do.

Maybe a place like good will or other thrift stores would have tables that you could decorate yourself and make your alter. It would kinda be more personal that was and in your price range.

Would a nice wooden tray work well? You can pick one up at an art supply store, Wal-Mart, Target, Home Depot... Lots of places and it wouldn't cost an arm and a leg.

Good suggestions and points, everyone. :28:
I use a little tray similar to your bamboo-table link, Beowulf- but it doesn't have legs, and that is good for me as I need a portable altar- given the circumstances in my home. (Kid, spouse, hungry dog...)

Just remember, Beowulf- it's solely the power that you possess that makes any instrument Magical. You could even use a cardboard box if you dress it well enough.

What constitutes "well enough"? you could use a raw cardboard box if that was all that's handy.

I suggest checking out this essay on creating an altar from practicaly nothing. Keep in mind that it's written for an ADF altar and not for Wiccan or Wiccan-influenced altars, which are far more common, it's still a great example of how your altar doesn't need to be anyhting fancy to be an altar.

I'm no expert, but it looks like a big ol' lump of quartz to me, with some other impurities mixed in for good luck.

I'm sure Chris will be able to identify it a little better :).
