I was in a christian chat room today (I like the people there it's not that I was trying to start anything) and this girl comes in the room and says "I will put a spell on anyone who tries to preach their god to me." She then IMed me and told me she was wiccan as well. I told her it's not right to threaten cursing people and i find it offensive. She told me it was just a joke and that im uptight. I was the only one she told that she was joking.

Does anyone else believe its wrong to joke around abut cursing another person? Especially if one is Wiccan?

I absolutely agree with you. I find it extremely worrisome when people claiming to be witches say things like that. Whether they have any ability or not, it's stuff like that that paints such a negative picture of pagan religions to others.
As for uptight, I was sort of put off by the link to love spells at the top of the page. So...I think I have you beat.

I find it petty and immature of this girl for her behaviour and it's no wonder that christians get the wrong impression of paganism.

I think it's all a matter of who you are joking with. For instance, I'm very close to almost all the people who know I am a Wiccan, and I have very fun, honest relationships with all of them. So I don't feel insulted if my boyfriend calls me a 'godless heathen,' or if my mom tells me to cast a spell and make her win the lottery. We all know it doesn't really work that way, and we all know it's a joke, so it's no big deal.
On the other hand, if I was in a room full of people I knew nothing about, aside from the fact that they were all Christian, and thus, might have a slightly skewed vision of witchcraft, I would exercise a lot more discretion.
As far as people claiming they will curse others, it doesn't really bother me, aside from the fact that it sometimes can serve to make the entire religion look petty and attention-seeking. Okay, so maybe it does bother me. But generally, I see people who are joking as people with a similar sense of humor to mine (although, as I said, I hope that they'd do it in the right company), and people who are not joking as people who will quickly find another fad to latch onto and be out of my hair.
Not sure if this response was useful or not, but I hope another opinion helped out.

Again, I'm seconding Skylights here (wow, I've never agreed with anyone more than once before. This is new.) It depends on the people you're joking with.
The two first class petty officers I work with as well as several others in my upper chain of command are aware of my religeon and we joke about it all the time. (I've been accused of cursing my masterchief and been asked to bless the command so we pass ceartain inspections. I also occasionally crack off with "Don't make me go wicked witch on you.") If done in the right setting and with the right people, humor can be had. I take my religeous life very seriously, but this doesn't mean I'm dour and get offended if anyone jokes or tries to be light about things. You have to be able to laugh at yourself.
But I have friends who don't know about me and their are reasons. Somepeople just can't be joked with.
You are not up tight Sanity, she was just a tween that wasn't thinking. Give her time to grow up and actually experiance a little life. Does wonders.
Blessed all who seek.

when you threaten to beat somebody up with your fists is it not wrong?
When you threaten to do anything to somebody under any conditions magic or not where in the threatened person does not deserve it is it not wrong?

Well she does The Craft no good..There is so much negativity out there towards it from people who simply are ignorant of what Paganism and Wicca really is..I have been called evil...asked if I preformed Satantic acts..which truthfully is absurd as Satan is a Christian figure ..I was watching a new Scooby Doo movie the other day with my niece and I was so mad at what they were teaching the children..they were talking about Wicca the religion and had it all wrong..They teach our children this stuff from the earliest age and it is so hard to overcome..We definitely don't need others out there fanning the flame..I believe in the 3 fold law and I believe you get back what you put out..I don't think you are uptight at all..
Bright Blessings,
Lori
