Wiccans beliefs on spirits

Postby JamesDean » Sat Dec 09, 2006 2:44 pm

What are Wicca' belief on spirits? I've tried to look them up online, but haven't really found much. I'm wanting to find out because the only person I've talked to about my ability to sense ghosts (or spirits or whatever you like to call them) that I didn't feel like a loony telling (besides my fiancee, who can sense them too) is one of my friends that I found out is a Wicca.

She also has been the only person that has had any sort of answers for me, and some of them seem to explain pretty well some of my real unusual experiences.

I'm young to Wicca, so my views might not match that of others.

I use "spirit" as a blanket term for ghosts, totems, angels, demons, elementals, devas, djinn etc., because I just don't know what it is. I don't define them in any way as minions of heaven or hell, but natural aspects or entities on their own with their own agendas and goals (based on the nature of their existance).

As far as ghosts go (I don't like that word at all, but it helps define what I'm talking about here) I think that a person's essence remains in some cases - rather than reentering the cycle - if there was a strong emotion associated with their death. This could be anger, hate, love, confusion, sorrow. The ghost might not realize they're dead, and continue to try and interact with people, causing more confusion and frustration. They might want to protect somebody, get revenge, or guard something. Or they are being held somehow and need help.

Anyway, I'm definately not an expert on the subject, but these are just my ideas. I think it's good to help them, acknowledge them, work with them, but be careful because they aren't human anymore (if ever they were) and I think they can hurt you if they are strong enough.

They are the person's essence, or spirit, or whatever you call it. Just everything of them that isn't phyiscal. I know this from my experience.

There has been only one ghost that I know that I know how she died, and that was a violent murder.

The ones that were human are still human, just without physical bodies. Just like living people, there is good, bad, and in between. I've also found that some animals actually become ghosts. My fiancee's family's old dog Bear is actually a ghost now. Just he can't chase the cats anymore lol!

So far I have yet to see a ghost harm anybody, but with the exception of one I haven't encountered any that seemed really menacing. I know some that are quite negative or even very creepy (in a stranger danger sort of way) but seemed harmless, and not really menacing.

The one that was the strongest me and my fiancee ever encountered, and was the only menacing one that we've ever encountered. She got scared and described as evil, a word she never uses. It seemed to have bad intent, but something really unusual that I did (that I still don't really understand) really weakened it and scared it away.

From now on my and my fiancee are going to be more careful, as we have a better idea of what could be out there.

was there any specific questions you wanted answered.
that aside sercee have a pretty good overview on the topic.

but i generally dont use the term "spirit" unless the person im talking too knows what spirits im actually talking about, which i think was established in her list ghosts, angels, demons etc. so i generally identify them in a way people can understand instead of the category(for lack of a better word) to which it could be debated they belong.

Well, I'm not Wiccan, but I am what you could call a 'spiritwalker'. You should add Shamanism to your online search. To answer your questions, it would be good to have more details and specifics, there are paths that work with your gifts. I can answer questions from my own perspective, if that would be helpful.

What are some good Shamanism sites? I tried looking them up, but I kept getting results about WarCraft.

Try combining the search with pagan or another descriptive word. Here is a site I found when I did it.

Only through silence can we truly hear the words of the Goddess and God.

"but I kept getting results about WarCraft."

i absolutely hate when that happens, i was on this one site that was telling me that with the use of the enchanted ruby i could obtain a lvl 5 fire ball, and i was thinking this person was a total fraud, then i saw that it was related to some game and i felt like a total idiot.

I have some links on the basics. I get a lot of rpg results in my searches too! When I looked up Djinn I got so many I couldn't tell what they were without going into them to check! Very frustrating! I'll come back with them in a wee while. There's one that has a good and extensive recommended reading list too, I'm out of the loop with the latest books.

Could you post the link to the website that has the list of reading material. One thing I am interested in is finding some good reading about ghosts, or spirits, or whatever you guys prefer to call them.

First two good Shamanism sites, the first has the reading list, the second expands on the first's info:

Here are links on Spiritism, which is from a Christian perspective,so may be closer to what you seek:

I hope these are useful.

As a Christian I believe that ghosts are most likely demonic in nature (though I couldn't ever back that up with a scrap of scripture). I say that because demons seek only to avert our attention from our Maker, and if they can can give us a chill in the process, then why not?

While people in Christ's day believed that one's spirit hung around for a few days afterthe person died, there is no room that I know of in the Bible to allow for ghosts roaming around indefinitely.

Be extremely careful dealing with things. Better yet, seek God instead, you will find a much better friend in Him. In my miniscule amount of experience with these things I have found them to be hateful creatures.

"I say that because demons seek only to avert our attention from our Maker"

Demons like any other being have better things to do.

"Better yet, seek God instead"

if you want god go be with it, but dont preach, its un-becoming.
