I'm new to all this & the first items I've bought are candles & essential oils.

What essential oils are most common in spell making? I'm trying to buy as many as I can.

Can anyone tell me what Opium oil would be used for? Is it used in spells at all or is it just for burning in an oil burner.

I would use Opium EO for dream work, sleeping problems and as an aphrodisiac.

You'll allways come across EO's that you haven't got and that you want but if you're looking to stock up on a few basics then I suggest these:

Lavender - always good to have around, relieves stress, tension, can ease headaches, good for treating insomnia, an excellent disinfectant, good for panic and trama. This should be in everyone's supply cupboard.

Sage - good for cleansing and dispelling negative energies. Helps lift the spirit and is great for treating aching muscles and rhuematism.

Lemon - a good way to cleanse and uplift and purify the body. Balances the nervous system.

Myrrh - use to feel connected to spirit and to help emotional blockages.

Patchouli - great for feeling earthy and connected. Good for grounding.

Rosemary in an oil burner does wonders for colds and stuff like that.

I've also made a room spray that is just amazing for dispelling icky energies (breaks up catbox odors like no one's business too!) and smels wonderful.

It's a pretty strong concentration, you should know that.

In a small spray bottle, add a teaspoon each of rosemary, lavender and cedar essential oils to a cup and a half of water. Shake well, spray where needed.

I also have a recipe kicking aorund for the greatest bug repellant ever, made from essential oils- and smells great, not nasty. Safe for use on pets even. if you want, I can dig it up and post.

I know those aren't really spells, but oils are such useful things...

In my experience, I agree with Sobek. I find that the best things for respiratory problems are eucalyptus, tea tree and citrusy things like lemon and bergamot.

Rosemary is great, though. It helps me with feeling revitalized, it sort of stimulates my head and helps break the fog that collects in there sometimes. It's a good one for massages.

I have several oils I use in the household. I usually have Lavendar, Citronella, Clove, Eucalyptus, Tea tree, Geranium, Juniper and Cedarwood. I use them for all sorts of purposes. I put Citronella and Geranium in my laundry, [ Geranium in bedding - it aids sleep] Lavendar and Tea tree with Clove for disinfecting and cleaning. Eucalyptus is ace for inhalants and sore muscles, Tea tree is useful medicinally too, like Lavendar, which heals burns and other injuries. I use Juniper and Cedarwood in my burner, it's part of my ritual habits. These oils and others also have many other uses, including ritual and Psychic associations.

I've done a bit of experimentation with blending oils for different purposes. Sometimes I macerate herbs that I have in plentiful supply in a carrier oil (usually almond) and then blend in essential oils. I think my best formulation to date has been one to ease grief using, among other things, cypress, cedarwood, sandalwood, rosemary and lime. I have sometimes given this to people who I know regularly meditate or pray along with a piece of blue lace agate and a white candle (unless I know they prefer an oil burner). Usually at some point they ask if I will make them some more. I don't know if it really helped them or if they just liked the way it smelled! :)

I use lavender quite a bit as well as birch, juniper and lemongrass. I use rosemary for a lot of things, although not usually for colds. I probably use rosemary more as an herb than as an oil though. (I drink green tea with rosemary nearly every day just for its anti-cancer properties.)

I have to ask something here as I happen to sell both Essential Oils and Fragrance Oils on my site (over 200 total), and I am seeing something here that is confusing me..........

To those of you in the UK, Canada, and Australia: Are you telling me you are using OPIUM Oil, as in Essential Oil derived from the Poppy plant?

I have access to the largest EO list that I know of (300+ although only 100 are on the site currently), and have NEVER seen Opium Essential Oil --- Fragrance Oil yes, but NOT Essential. Its outlawed here in the US (Opium being a controlled substance).

I just checked the bottle of Opium oil I have. It's fragrant oil not essential.

What is the difference between essential oils & fragrant oils? Can I only use essentials for spells? Are fragrants just for burning?

Yes they are just for buring they would usually have a warning not to use on skin.
Frangrance oils will work for spells as well just don't 'anoint' yourself with them.

Essential oils are made of the flower, leaf or bark or plants and anr 100% natural fragrance oils are usually synthetic.
It is really worth buying a little book on essential oils as some can irritate ( lemon oil or any type of citrus oil can irritate if you use it on the skin and are then exposed to sunlight). The books are widly available and cheap :D

An Essential Oil is made by using actual plant parts (flowers, stems, fruits, roots -- this varies from oil to oil) and is extracted from the plant via distillation (water or steam) and pressure. Once the Oils has been extracted from the plant, the water is removed (you'll find this water sold as a "hydrosol") and the actual Essential Oil is whats left behind.

A Fragrance Oil is not made from an actual plant at all, but is a scientifically made COPY of the actual plant oil. Perfumers and other folks combine groups of ingredients that trick your senses into thinking youre smelling the real thing. This is done as a cost saving measure as TRUE Essential Oils can be cost prohibitive depending on the use intended.
(Ex: Rose Fragrance Oil can be had for around $5.00/oz - Rose Essential Oil on the other hand runs $300.00/oz or more depending on quality.)

Fragrance Oil is fine for making your house smell terrific, or for making some type of personal product (Body Mist, Soap etc). thats why they were created.

Spellwork doesnt require the use of Essentials - your intent is much more important than using the "correct oil".

If you find bottles of "Essential Oils" at your local store, or at a booth at the fair that are selling for $4.95 a bottle when theyre normally $10.00 and up- you can pretty much rest assured that no matter WHAT the bottle says, you're dealing with a Fragrance Oil. Dont be confused by a bottle that says "Essence Oil" - this isnt an Essential, the manufacturer is trying to tell you its the "Essence of the Smell", not the Essential Oil itself. With rare exception TRUE Essential Oils will use the word "PURE" or some like term on the label and will contain no ingredients other than the Oil itself.

Real Rose oil, used to be made from Attar of roses, the Damascus rose, exclusively, and only the very Rich had it. It is still made and is still incredibly exclusive. The scent of Damascus Roses is heady and powerful, I think it's one of the most arousing scents ever. I buy most of my essential oils from my pharmacy, where they are sold for medicinal purposes and distilled to the British Standard, they have the initials B.P.on them and a mark to certify this. I also use Friar's Balsam, it's a good inhalant and a handy disinfectant too, this is pharmacy bought and cheap too.The oils are quite inexpensive, but the Geranium, Juniper and Cedarwood, I buy from Holland and Barratt, a health food store here, these ones are rather expensive, but worth it, as a little goes a long way, so they last. [Most of them retail between £6 and £11, though some cost more] I don't use fragrance oils, as you say Ravenwing, the synthetic nature of the scent is something I dislike. I have problems using a lot of 'modern' chemicals, I have sensitivities and allergies and things like 'biological' washing powder hurt my sinuses and make me wheeze. I use soap flakes and soda crystals] I hate the synthetic scents of most disinfectants also and don't use chemical air fresheners either. I use my burner and incense to freshen the air as well as my oil mixes for cleaning, as they generally make the place smell lovely. I use good old fashioned bleach for the heavy duty stuff [ cat trays, toilet etc.] but I 'm not overly fond of bleachy smells either. I also use soda crystals a lot, good for neutralising odours. There is another phohibitively costly oil ,Neroli, is that correct, Ravenwing? I believe the real deal on that one is very costly too, but it's another overpoweringly beautiful smell. Do you have RED sandal wood oil, I used to adore this, but can no longer find it here, any where? I need to have a look at 'The Thrifty Pagan' don't I ?

I asked this once regarding sandalwood. It turns out (on top of what Eretik just said about the scent) that it has a lot to do with the extraction process. What I was told is that to get oil from some flowers such as chamomile, rose and sandalwood you need a HUGE amount of petals and you basically need to squish them. I think steam is used in the process, but I don't remember clearly. Anyway, the point is that the amount of material needed to yield a very small amount of oil is insane.
