That is a good question, many people do not know the answer. I have always been taught durring the dark times that grimoire's where hidden from those who would destroy them. Hidden in the 'Shadows' Later when the dark ages had passed very few of these books survived, and the name grimoire was replaced with book of shadows. It can be seen as a thing of rememberence from when we had to hide our sacred books. It is a bit more 'tactful' according to some people. Read the witch's creed and it may become clear what 'shadows' means to you. here is an exerpt:

"Hear now the words of the witches
the secrets we hid in the night
when dark was our destiny's pathway
a truth we bring forth into light"

this is the beginning of most versions though some words may be a bit different.
Even after the dark times we concealed our knowlede and experiences written in our book of shadows. This was not only to protect ourselves but others. This is only one view and I encourage you to go out and find others. Blessed Be.

your welcome :P you may want to remember that a book of shadows is more like the personal jornal of a witch than a book of spells as well.

yeah i know, it holds all the knowledge a witch has, and sometimes its passed for generation to generation, unfortunately my family is not of witches, so i must all by my self.
actually i have a book of shadows for my knowledge, and a notebook where i keep my progress, and notes on what i have done so far.
