Understanding elemental magick

Okay, this might sound like a "stupid" question, but what exactly do you use the elements for in magick? I know that in magick, you are working with the universe and its forces and I know my element (water), but I still just don't understand exactly what's going on. Would somebody be kind enough to help me understand, please? Or at least point me to a good website which has a good explanation on what exactly it's all about?

For me it's more about becoming aware of these elements. They are within all of us at any given time. They are the building blocks of life, and are asked to be present to add that life to whatever our working or celebration is.

Makes sense, and I can see what you mean. Not only are they within us, they really help us with our spells since they are a part of the universe and we are working with the forces of the universe.
