Who Are "The Ancient Ones"?
Who Are "The Ancient Ones"?
I've heard you should never call on them. Who are they and why? Blessed be.
Re: Who Are "The Ancient Ones"?
I have never heard of these Ancient Ones nor can I find anything on them. Do you mind explaining where you heard about these? Or are you talking about Great Old Ones?

Can you be more specific?
I am the Earth, The Sun and the Stars
And I am the also the Moon
I am all animal and birds,
And I am the outcast as well, and the thief
I am the low person of dreadful deeds,
And the great person of excellent deeds
I am Female. I am Male and I am Neuter. - Devi

The only 'ancient ones' I know of are fictional... What more do you know of them?
Re: Who Are "The Ancient Ones"?
In our circle we call on the Ancient Ones who bless and protect tbe circle.
To me this means the Gods and Goddesses of old, ones who story may have been lost, yet they still guide.
These could also be light beings, fairies, ancestors, spirit guides, ET's, angels etc...
We might not know their names but they hover around us. It may be possible that their is a similar set of dark forces that would mirror any of these entities yet in our calling upon them I request only the ones who would bless and protect this circle.
The thing I try to engrain in students is the way you speak to be clear and concise. Keeping contactions of negative words out. If you are vague about the energy you wish to draw in who knows what sort of willy nilly ride your in for.
So if you were to call on all the Ancient Ones, then ya...it's party time. You don't know who will show up.
If you call upon the Ancient ones of fertilization, then you better be clear about what you wish to grow.

"Ancient Ones of Hill and Mound" - - as Firebirdflys said they could be deities, fairies and/or ancestors. In our group (and I think most pagan groups) they are not considered as being ET's or angels though.
In Trad Craft there is a group of beings known as The Hidden Company - they are the Old Ones who have passed on and become part of the land spirits in the place where they practiced and will, if they think you are worthy, teach you their ways.

Re: Who Are "The Ancient Ones"?
I meant to say as well, that there are some people who believe that the gods and goddesses of anicient times became the "wee folk" who live in the hill mounds, so of course, they are ancient.
There are some people who say you shouldn't call on the Watchtowers, either, when casting your circle. It all depends if you've been trained how to do this.
Calling on the Ancient Ones can give a very powerful energy to your circle and you must never forget to thank them for blessing you with their attendance but I wouldn't suggest doing this if you're still in the learning stage or don't have a mentor or experienced group to work with you.

Re: Who Are "The Ancient Ones"?
Thank you Jenny crow,
You explained that very well.
As I was writing that post and thinking about "those who have gone before" it occurred to me that ET's and Angels may also have gone before.....Not something I'm generally thinking about when we are inviting the old ones in, but I may ponder on that more now that it has struck me.. considering the Formorians were larger than life and supernatural beings with some who went on to co-create with the Gods we think of as our Ancient ones...Not really sure I wish for a Fomorian in my circle but the idea the Gods hooked up with whom ever they wanted, ...who were these other beings if not Extra Terrestrial? Who are the Gods if not extra Terrestrial. ... And with what Christians think of as angles we call spirit guides, may be one in the same.
The wee ones have mythos across many different peoples of the world, these mystic beings are born of where? Are they of this world? It wouldn't seem so. Could it be the ET's have left behind the faye to watch over us, play tricks on us...amuse us as we amuse them?
Hummm, and now that I go even deeper, what are we? If not star stuff?
And yes...thank you for bringing this up
Blessings, Firebird

offerings of mead, ale, bread, milk, honey and water are first choices for me, as are flowers.Calling on the Ancient Ones can give a very powerful energy to your circle and you must never forget to thank them for blessing you with their attendance

I had to smile when I read - "Not sure I wish for a Fomorian in my circle......" -I know exactly what you mean!........ considering the Formorians were larger than life and supernatural beings with some who went on to co-create with the Gods we think of as our Ancient ones...Not really sure I wish for a Fomorian in my circle but the idea the Gods hooked up with whom ever they wanted, ...who were these other beings if not Extra Terrestrial? Good post Firebirdflys - I have this 'thing' in my head that ET's are the beings that are shown in the movies visiting this planet abducting one of us every now and again, I've just never connected them to our "Ancient Ones" or the Gods - but you've given me something to think about.
To me, though, our spirit guides are those beings we make an agreement with (before we incarnaate) to "watch out for us and guide us" during our stay here in the physical world, they may have incarnated before or maybe not; and/or they may be family who have passed over. I just can't think of them as angels - that's way too Christian for me lol.
And yes, mead, ale honey, milk, bread are my choices too.

I think I read about ancient ones from Silver Ravenwolf? I'm pretty sure Isis was one of them. Blessed be.

Re: Who Are "The Ancient Ones"?
There is a general invocation of the "ancient ones" in "Solitary Witch", attributed to Lady Morningstar9 in consecrating a triple casting circle. So in that instance, and many other instances of Raven Silverwolfs practices, she calls on the ancient ones regularly. It's a standard ancestral/deity invocation.
The only reference I know of to the Ancient Ones and never calling on them comes from HP Lovecraft. And is Fiction.
