How do you shuffle your tarot cards?

Postby RosieMoonflower » Sun Apr 03, 2016 5:41 pm

I have been reading tarot for years with just 1 deck but recently I purchased a new deck. The cards are a little longer than my old ones, and it makes them difficult to shuffle. I use to shuffle my old cards like I would a playing deck of cards, but it's not working. So how do you all shuffle your cards? Maybe I can adopt a new way of shuffling for this deck. Thanks all!

Overhand shuffle.
It's easiest to do with larger cards.
Hope this helps. :fairy:

I just trained myself to shuffle the cards like playing cards, even with them being larger. I'm a creature of habit.

The overhand shuffle is even giving me trouble, these cards are just so dang long! Lol. I found one called "the Hindu shuffle" (not meant to be offensive to anyone who is Hindu, that's just what it is called), I think I may try to learn it.

I like to do a combination of overhand shuffle then starting four piles and randomly place a card in each pile. The pile I'm drawn to is the one I place on top when I put the deck back together. I do that with all my cards, but I started doing it that way because my first deck also had pretty large cards in them. I felt like I stood a better chance of making sure they were well and truly mixed up. :)

I put them in two decks, flip them against each other...then spread them in a big pile and just go to whatever cards feels right to me. Yeah. Not the most professional shuffle!

I have probably the messiest way of doing this- I scatter my cards on the table, and swirl them around and around until I'm satisfied, then I push them all back into a pile again. From there, I mix the order of the cards even more, inserting random cards into the middle. Once they're all neatly together again, I start pulling the ones I need out from random parts of the pile.

Let me clarify- I have poor fine motor skills and tiny hands (my ring size is a 5) My cards are larger than my hands, and I haven't had much practice with the shuffling part (I've been focused on the reading itself). I figure as long as it gets done, it doesn't matter too much how it gets done.

I have arthritis and a new deck is a misery, so I spread, swirl and mix, combine and then cut into 4 stacks and draw one card from the top of each stack in sequence 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4 etc.

With a broken-in deck, I over-hand shuffle, but still divide into 4stacks.

I am a terrible shuffler, so I stir the pot. I cleanse my cards first, then scatter them on my table and stir them around and mix them up until I feel it's time to stop. Then I gather them into a nice stack and spread them out.

Lol, teaching myself the overhand shuffle with a new set (my first!) that is just a little bit to big for my hands :)
I'm dealing, though.

However, I wonder whether the overhand shuffle randomises the reversals enough... :/

Place them face down on a cloth and "spread them" to mix them until I decide to stop. Of course, I do use reversals.
