I've been researching them.
But I really trust the opinions of the people on this board the most.
If I ever had a coven..it would have to include a great many of you.
I get the idea. But break it down for me.
How is a protective bubble any different than the natural aura we all generate?
Do you have to actively maintain it? I can split my focus pretty good, but I'm not sure I could envision an all encompassing bubble all day and still do work and everything else I have to do.
Why?

Hmm. I suppose if I think of my aura at all, it's as layers of light emanating from my chakras. I'd imagine an outer layer just beyond my aura & specify that it strengthens with each breath and maintains itself to repel anything harmful. In the past, if I were to encounter a threatening person or dog, I'd instinctivly put the force-field between us by pushing ice-cold light out from inside, the same way I'd push energy to charge something with intent.

When I started practising witchcraft I was told that a protective bubble is an energyborder. I can be used in different ways. To protect, to shield or to make yourself 'unseen'.
You can charge it by visualizing a bubble around you that draws energy from you. And you don't have to visualise it the whole time. It just should be recharged from time to time.
Others visualize that the bubble gets fed by a blessed Item that has to be recharged.
At least that's what I have been told many years ago.

When we cast circle it is not a linear line on a flat plane but the circumference of a sphere that extends above and below the same distance, that's what I think of when you say protective bubble.

(Personal thoughts)
It's a conceptual partition or boundery between what is outside or in - it doesn't really matter if it is a sphere or a circle (unless you think it matters) because it is another type of thought=form. Thinking it works; makes it work. Childmind /visualisation shapes spirit; imagination, focus and belief.
The great thing about energywork is that with practice it doesn't need a great deal of belief - you can feel it working.
It can be refined to be lots of different kinds of boundaries, rigid or yielding. I for example like it to be a space that creates a pause between energetic action and reaction - breathing space - that can deflect sudden energetic bursts from both outside and in (because energy working requires a degree of control in both directions and I am a fire sign - lots of swift passionate energy which can "erupt"). It is as much about respecting other people as self-respect.
It takes regular meditation, maintenance and a degree of preparatory work and is linked to my centering and grounding routine. I would love to say it is a magic bullet but we don't really work like that do we? - in the right frame of mind - grounded and "Personal boundary up" it's golden. If fatigued, at a low ebb, confused or otherwise "out of the zone" or "avoiding being in the zone" - its it's only as reliable as we are choosing to be.

(More personal opinions)
As for "envisioning it all day", actively this would be a massive distraction and chore; conscious work is tasked to creating a "key" within the subconscious - like deciding and coming to an understanding of a symbol or coorespondance; it becomes "banked" and can be "switched on or turned up"; be brought to mind and become conscious: Though=Form ... with regular maintenance. How is it different to an aura? Think of it like a "tasked" attribute of an aura.
Shielding is usually developed as an extension of "grounding", the most common ability homed by maintenance and the discipline of regular upkeep.

Re: Protective Bubbles...Tell me about them
No worries, I wrote a kinda course on energy work quite some time ago - its something Ive spent a lot of time on in the past, though I will admit I have been neglectful in practice recently.
