anyone here design tattoos, or just good at drawing?

Postby LaFiamma » Thu Aug 24, 2006 7:36 pm

I'm having the worst time designing a tattoo...i'm a decent artist myself, but this one just isn't happening...if anyone would be interested in sketching something and scanning it, I'd love to see what other people can come up with.

What I'm looking for is something involving Apollonian symbolism...a swan, a lyre, a laurel crown, branch or leaf, a dolphin, bow and arrow...any combination of those. The design will probably be going on my right shoulder, and should be somewhere between 3 and 5 inches square- or be able to be modified to the appropriate size without a lot of distortion.

I will happily send photos so you can add the design to your portfolio if I use your sketch.

I can take a shot at it. But, the details will be lacking for that many things in that small of space. You have to remember that the smaller the tattoo the less details there can be.

If you would like, you could send me what you have come up with up to know so that I can get an idea of what you are looking for.

Also, you may want to look up some tattoo shops around your area. Often you can work with the artists there to come up with the right one for you. Easier seeing as you will be one on one with them. You may have to commit to using them to do your actual tattoo so do your research onwho you would like to do it.

Good luck!

Thanks for responding...

I don't have a scanner or access to one, so I'm not able to send any examples of what I've been working on.

Also...I'm looking for a design 3-5 inches square, not 3-5 square inches. 3-5 inches square is between 9 and 25 square inches. Which should be plenty of room.

I have a particular artist in mind, he does amazing work with a design provided, but is only really good with certain types of original designs.

I have, however, narrowed down the elements I would like to incorporate: specifically, a laurel crown, a lyre and a bow and arrow, and a swan if it can work well into the design. One thing that I was trying to draw was a lyre with a swan's head on it, or a lyre in the shape of a swan's body...but that didn't work very well.

Does that give you a bit more to go on?

Ah yes. that does give you a lot more room.

It does help a bit. I will see what I can come up with. I know how hard and fustrating it can be when you can't get the tattoo design you want just right. I usually let my tattooist design my tats even though I can. I find they always do such an amazing job when it is their own creation. It all comes down to preference.

I'll post back again when I have something drawn up!

I no its not the same as designing it urself but i found 1 of my tattoos online. I just searched fpr the tattoo design on google images. Lots of tattoo artists put their work up on websites now, like we all do. That way ur not made 2 use the person who designed it. Just an idea hun.

yeah, I've tried that...the combination of elements I'm looking for is an odd one, so it's going to be hard, if not impossiblt to find something prefabricated.

I just talked to one of my Grovemates yesterday and when I mentioned a couple of the elements I'm looking to incorporate, she suggested somethign that was pretty much exactly what I was trying unsuccessfully to draw...so she's going to try to come up with somehting. So between that and the couple of other people who have already said they'd try, maybe i'll get something, or several ideas for a composite...we'll see.

The south pacific is famous for Tattoos, I dont think Tatts like the ones you are talking about as the deal mainly with warriors and manhood, but I will try and apply some techniques and see what I can come up with.

I'm having trouble with a tatoo design too. I want a tortoise on the inside of my right fore arm (tortoises are my totem/power/spirit animal (I haven't decided what the best term for me is yet)), but I don't know how I want it. know I want it as a side-on view, but I don't want it photo-realistic, I don't want it really cartoony and I don't want it tribal. My, I'm fussy aren't I? Plus because I'm a creative type I feel I should draw it myself. Though I'm not very good at drawing things that actually exsist.

I don't know where you live but I would suggest going to Miami Ink. They treat you nicely and make sure your tattoo is just how you want it, but not crap. I've never been there but I watch their show on TLC and they're great with everybody. They're located on South Beach. Kat is great for portraits and Ami specializes in Japanse artwork. Sorry if this information is useless.

I live in WV, but that won't stop me from getting some portraits done by Kat.
