Which God or Goddess to pray to?

Postby Dreamy Mermaid » Mon Sep 04, 2006 3:16 pm

I am not exactly new to spell casting as I have been practising it since I was 14 but I have never formally studied the art and so I don't have as much knowledge about it as many of you here and I'm kinda lost about which God or Goddess I should summon for a spell to help me with work and family stress I am dealing with now...does anyone have any ideas? I did n't think I should call on Venus since she specialises in love and beauty but what about Isis?

Start looking for goddesses for family. Hera might be a good one, but if you're not comfortable with the Greek pantheon, then I'm sure you can find one in one of the other pantheons.

As far as i am concerned (and this iss just my personall opinion.) Their is only one God/Goddess. What name you call them is whichever ones make you comfortable. For me, I call God Pan as I grew up in the woods and saw Natures beauty all my life. I call the Goddess the name of the Norn as I have a trace of Scandanavian in me and I liked them from my manga reading days. Once I learned more about them it felt natural.

As for evolution, My view is that faith tells us what happened, Science is simply unraveling the how.

Blessed Be.

On topic:

Generally, I pray to the God and the Goddess. I call them just that, our Mother and Father Goddess and God. Sometimes I pray to Athena, as a student I need all the help I can get, sometimes I look to Isis...sometimes I salute Baccus with a libation. I feel best with the Greek pantheon (and YES, historically, when Greece took over Egypt many, many, many women followed the cult of Isis and she was absorbed into the Greek pantheon) and that's what I know best.

XD Ah! Megisama! / Oh! My Goddess...hehe...I saw the movie years and years ago....at least THAT's the only Manga I can think of that has Urd and Skuld, lol

Mmm...my old Anime and Manga days.....

If we are the children of a God and a Goddess where do Venus and the other God and Goddesses come in?

I would pray to Yahweh (the Judeo-Christian God) but I think He's angry with me because I have been praying to other Gods and He is a jealous God.

What deities do you believe in? Who are you familiar with? Do you feel closer to any particular pantheon than others?

For family-related issues, I would suggest looking either to a parental figure deity, or a hearth deity.

also...try not to pigeonhole the gods...I'm not especially familiar with the Romans, but for example...Aphrodite is the Greek goddess mostly thought of as one of romantic love, beauty, sex etc...but she was also a goddess who helped to foster friendship and compassion...

You could also try asking for help of whoever is willing/able to help...but you never know who you might get. Several years ago, the priestess of my grove had cancer. Before the staging operation to find out just how far it had spread, she did a healing ritual and asked for the help of anyone who was able to help...the next day when they did the operation, they couldn't find anything it was completely gone. But this lady who is very Irish-Celtic suddenly found herself with several deities of Indian and African origin hanging around....and they're still around today.

Then again, this all goes out the window if you aren't strictly polytheist and believe in the one god/one goddess, and everyone else is aspects of the one.

I belive in one god/goddess also, the differnt names are there personality, like if i wanted a knoliable goddess i whould call apon athena, and i cant think or any one ealse right now, but i call them god.goddess, mother/mather, lord/lady, just what evere i feel is right.

Dreamy Mermaid, i am intrested in why you prey to the christion/jewish god? I mean how do you see it as ok? I mean i understand that thats who you are comfortable preying to, but why do you prey to other gods then? you can PM me this if you like , i am just simply currisus because i dont understand it at all. My aunt is the same way.

To answer your question Addalaide, I've been a devout Christian for the past two years. At first I was just searching for answers because I was unhappy with my life and I felt that Christianity gave me satisfactory answers and it also comforted me but at the same time I felt that deep down I was unhappy and that something was missing and since last summer I kept coming out of the faith and going back to spell casting as well as my Catholic roots (I see Christianity as being different to Catholicism but that's a different discussion). I have to say I believe Christianity is quite feasible as there is much historical evidence supporting the Bible but I can't help but feel there must be a female divinity out there as well as a male. At times when reading the Old Testament I could n't help but feel bad towards their many references to women as being inferior. But at the same time Yahweh has been amazing to me and protected me and I think that Jesus is incredible so I'm not completely turning my back from Him.

Then this summer I decided that once and for all I am going to follow my heart and my own intuition because at times I felt like I was brainwashed by other Christians and I like spell casting, the horoscope and consulting psychics and the idea that there is a Goddess (or many Goddesses) out there because sometimes it's nicer to have girly chats rather than always consulting someone of a different gender to you. It may seem as though I have n't quite gathered my thoughts and opinions on this and it's true, this has all happened fairly recently and it is only now that I am giving myself some guilt-free liberty to explore a larger scope of spirituality without feeling as though I am in the devil's hands and heading for eternal damnation. But at the same time I am aware that Yahweh is a jealous God and won't like me praying to other God's so I don't feel like I can depend on Him so much now :/

I sense some pushing and pulling and confusion...I feel that you really are feeling guilty, if you really believe you're headed towards damnation.

*sigh* This is what makes me sad about Christianity. For a simple thing like exploration, they threaten you with fire and brimstone, and damnation.

Your God maybe jealous, but he will get over it. The Gods are fickle, for we are just mere playthings to thier immense and great lives. I believe in a God and Goddess who love and teach, and provide guidence and NEVER EVER punishment. They love. And I think you need some loving Goddesses in your life :)

In any case, find some time...sit and think...relax. Make a list of what you like and don't like, ect. Read as much as you can about Wicca. There's a forum all about Websites and Books here.

Don't feel so bad....I pray that the Goddess will bless you.

The best way I can describe how I view the God/dess is how it was described to me: as a diamond. The Supreme Being is the entire diamond, each facet is each name that we have for it (ie Ariadne, Zeus, Isis, Thoth, etc). They are each part of the entire thing, but it is the part that we connect with emotionally.

Beautifully put Tinu.

I just have trubal undersyanding how a christion can call appon and goddess, because it says there shal be no other gods befor me, i mean if you think that a god whouldnt be upset being inferior to him then go for it i guess.

But on the other hand, i did read about how some belive that there is one "god" who created a male and a female god, and then thay where the ones who created humanity and nature witch i guess whould make them less of gods? Sorry i am trying to make it make sence to me.

I had ALOT of problumes with christianity. I dont even want to go threw the list i have. I think its mostly because i have no other choise than christianity, as my mother is proud to put it " She had the fear of God cast into me!" So i think that did alot.

Wright down what you belive in, weither you mention a god/ess or not just right it all down, its how you feel, What you think is moral in immoral.

It took me almost a year to not fear hell, witch is a short time compared to most people.

I'ld say about 50%, i dont believe in the christian creation theory, but I do believe we as a species had some help along the way. We are different in that we are aware of intelligent consciousness, energy, etc. Did we evolve from Monkeys? I doubt it, do I think 7 days and it was done...nope.

Being Greco-Pagan, I worship the Greek Gods. I chiefly worship Apollo and Dionysus, since I am heavily involved in the theatre and the arts.

And even when I was christian, I never feared hell. I figured everyone was going to end up there anyway.
