Help me understand this spell business

So I was reading a few things about spells and I know this site has several ones here. I understand that spells arent like miracles or everyone would be using it to get what they want. Im confused about the whole spell thing...

On one site it claims:

"Spells are just as effective as prayer."

on this site I read:

"Spells are not miracles."

and on these pay sites that cast spells for you they all claim they are "Guarenteed to work!" and if it doesnt work: either you did something wrong, the moon wasnt full or it just was something out of your reach.

So how effective are spells? Why are they done if they are not that effective? Has anyone experienced that a spell has worked for them before? Or am I misunderstanding the point of casting spells?

I agree with the "spells are just as effective as prayer" statement.

Spells and prayer are both as effective as you believe them to be, but what many people forget is that sometimes the universe's answer is "no" that does not mean that your pleas were not heard by the powers that be, it just means that they have other plans.

Many people hold the beliefe that spells and prayer are really very much the same thing, except that with spells, you are actively working with various implements while praying.

Some people think spells are more effective. The only reasoning that I can think of for spellwork being more effective that I could personally see to be legitemate is the fact that you're actively doing something- you're physically handling various items, maybe have some music playing, incense burning, perhaps consuming some food and/or beverage, or writing something down, drawing, there are so many thgins that can take place during spellwork. The point is that psychologically, the momre you involve yourself with an endeavor, the more use of each of the senses you incorporate, the more you are focusing your mind on that subject....for example, if your spell involves (and keep in mind, i'm just throwing elements out from the top of my head, this isn't any actual spell here) focusing some energy into a glass of water, drinking the water, lighting candles, eating three slices of an apple, dancing around in a circle, writing down what you're working for seven times on a blue piece of paper in silver ink, drumming and praying, then you're investing a lot more energy than if all you did was to pray to whomever you're praying to, and your mind is going to be focused a lot more on what *you* need to do to make your goal happen.

If a site is guaranteeing a spell to work, well...Personally, I think sites like that are a load of tripe, and to try to guarantee such a thing is verging on, if not flat out fraudulent. What's the guarantee? If the spell doesn't work, how do you prove it? Or how would the business prove that it did?

Spells and prays i see as the same thing, your talking to a higher being, and asking for something/praising them. Myself, when i am in a circle and doing things, i am casting a spell, when i wake up in the moring and thank my godand goddess for the day, i am praying. So, a planed event i do in a circle, and randome things i do i considere a prayer/chant. Like if i am outside and its really hot ( just randomly thinking of something here ) and i do a chant asking for a cool breeze, i considere that a prayer, there words can be something you use every singal time you ask for this, but i still consider it a prayer because its randomly done, and outside of a circle.

Sometimes a spell wont hold though, i have personaly experienced that atlest 3 times this year. I live in an apt, and there are people all around me, so its hard for me to get a protection/purification spell to hold, because theres so much negativity around me i guess it eats threw. I have had to purifie my apt 3 or 4 times this year. Something very bad happend last time that made me do a extreamly long, and viguruse cleaning process. I think its because the spell dosnt hold because of what gose on around me.

Also, sites where you pay for spells...thats so fake.

Something like a purification spell is not going to be permanent. It's like cleaning your house...you vacuum, do the dishes, dust etc...and a few days later you may need to dust certain areas again, or you might have spilled someting and need to vacuum again etc...it's not that it doesn't "Hold", it's that things are constantly coming and going that they need to be redone from time to time. You might be able to strengthen the spell to keep things at bay for a longer time, but it's not going to last forever. That;s not necessarily somehting you're doing wrong, or the spell not working, it's just part of the way the world works.

Since LaFiamma has covered this, I won't go into it.. But, essentially, I do agree with this statement. They're both a concentration / focus of willpower and determination torwards a specific goal. They only differ in the way they are done .

This is also very true. Spells are not miracles, and should not be treated as such. They are best used alongside more 'traditional methods', i.e. A spell for energy and focus would assist in losing weight, since it gives you the required energy and focus to keep going to the gym every day.

However, simply using a spell on its own to 'magically lose weight' would be foolish. It's highly likely that such a spell would do nothing, since magic doesnt work that way . Or, rather.. It's almost impossible that you'd ever be able to bend and focus the energy of the Universe in such a way that you could instantaneously physically alter yourself. Not impossible, because 'nothing is impossible'.. Just highly highly improbable.

Operative words in that sentence.. pay sites. These people are out to make profit, so naturally they'll 'guarantee' their own product . They're not interested in any way about magic, Paganism or such.. They're only interested in getting your money and making profit. Avoid them at all costs.

I believe the others above me have done a pretty good job with this . But, to summarise, spells are you focusing your will upon a particular goal through the use of tools / visualisation / chanting / etc.. Some people use words and candles, others (like myself) don't use any tools or words and simply manipulate energy. It's all down to finding something that you are comfortable with. There's no point in trying to do it if you aren't happy with the way it's being done, because it'll only distract you and you won't be as focused. You need to try a few techniques out and find out which works best for you.

Oh yes i understand there not permanet, i just think that i have to do them quite alot more than i should. The building is, dieing i guess is a good word for it, and there have just been things that happend that are prety bad.
Like a mounth after we moved in we herd something that sounded like all our pots and pans where thrown across the room, extreamly loud, but the nabors didnt hear a thing, it scared my poor little squeekers so much he refused to come out of his box for a day.It was something loud enught i belive other people should have herd it.
There was also another thing that happend, very very very bad thing, our friend is terafied to come into the apt now.

It just seams like i have to do it a little more than normal, like i cleaned it, then someone had a paintball fight in it a mounth latter. But it dosnt matter friday is my last day here! The new place seams alot better, alot calmer, there is a river there and there are williw trees seronding the area and a fue fir trees. The energy feels very calm, atlest it did the 3 times we where there.

wow I'm really impressed at the explanations given by everyone. It actually helped a lot clear up my confusion about all of this. Thanks a lot! I was skeptical when I was viewing some of these pay to cast sites (curiosity got the best of me). But I noticed that this site gives a link to a site that I've researched and has a lot of bad rap from people that got scammed:

I'm curious if she put it up becuase, she was tired of people asking for gaurenteed magic in their life.

the environment, the condition of the house, the past events taken place in the area, even the day to day happenings will all affect that, so that a purification spell which may need to be done once every three months on one place might need to be done every other week somewhere else.

You know, thinking about what you said about your apartment (was it an apartment?), kind of reminds me of my home. I don't live with my parents anymore, but everytime I come home, it feels very dark and uncomfortable. Actually, it always felt that way, I just didn't notice how much it felt like that until I left for college. I don't even sleep in my room anymore, I sleep on my couch when I visit. Could be just paranoia, what do you think? I've had a few bad experiences in that house with hearing things in the night, my door opening mysteriously and seeing some one in the reflection of my dad's military medal case when NO ONE WAS HOME! Its a new house and was built for us when we moved in. So nobody died there or anything. Yet I always get bad vibes. Could it just be my imagination?

I should have done it probly once a month atlest to be honest, what really really made me very paranoide about being in here was when we lent the apt to our friend when we where away for a week he wanted to get away from where he lived so when we came back it feel like really really bad inside, our friend talked to my fionce and told him one of his friend tryed to strangal him and then stoled our truck ( we new the truck was stolen but we didnt know what happend ) that day i had already cleansed it because i thought it felt really bad, but i ended up going back the next day and doing it way way way better than i had, the past fue times i did it more as a tune up then a true cleansing, once i found out what happend i did a full evey room every closet cleansing. We hadnt had any major problumes befor that, but it really is the location and the people around it, it has alot to do with the people....

But like i said the new place seams way better, but i dont know how long it will be befor i get ahold of sage, i know the store in town sells it, but i donno how long it will be befor i get to it.

sage is available in any grocery store. no need to go to a new age store. And usually a lot less expensive. you can get it in the spice aisle (burn the crushed/ground stuff in a heatproof container), or if they sell it fresh, you can make a small bundle of your own easily...

buy a package/bundle/however they sell it from fresh sage and lay it out on a cookie sheet, turn your oven to the lowest setting (most ovens that I've seen have a lowest setting of 150-200 degrees) and pop the cookie sheet into the oven. This will allow you to dry the sage reasonably quickly- within a few hours, check on it periodically. When it's dried, you can tie it into a bundle with cotton string or thread (embroidery floos works great)

The store i go toi bought a 1 oz bag of crushed baisle for like 50 cents, she buys in bulk and re packages it into 1oz bags to sell.

that's insane. Wow. where I live, they sell a number of diffrent fresh herbs in most of the chain grocery stores for about $2/package, and a package is so much that i can't use it in time and have to dry it out so i don't have to throw it away.

Sage is really easy to grow, you could always grow your own (I know, that doesn't help you right now, but for the future)

for house smudging, i'm personaly a fan of rosemary bundles.

you can bundoe up many different herbs like people do sage, and burn them in the same manner.

i also find that i like the smell of burning rosemary a lot better than burning sage
