Dismissing Elementals

Postby Baratoz » Sat Dec 09, 2006 8:21 pm

I’d like to get everyone’s opinion on something. It involves dismissing the elements when you are closing a circle or after some spellwork. I have heard some conflicting information on how to dismiss them. One was to be polite and offer them the option of staying if they want to. I have also heard that you need to command them to leave afterwards and not give them the option to stay. The latter being because they can cause mischief if they linger with nothing to do. Imagine having a bored fire elemental in your home.

What do you all think?

My favorite invocation and dismissal I think is the one I found here on 's site. It tells the elements "go in peace and know you are always welcome here", I think that covers all the bases.

It depends really. Most people who are more inclined to ceremonial magick tend to command spirits because thats the way all ceremonial grimoires are written. Take a look for your self, the keys of solomon, the grimoire of armidel, even the simon necronomicon, all state that you should command the spirits otherwise they would run wild.

Though if they tend more towards new age magick, then they usually politely thank and dismiss them.

Personally, I think it depends on what types of spirits you are working with and what type of magic you are using. But as far as elementals, I just thank them and say they can go and do whatever, they usually/never cause any harm or anything.

When calling quarters I will say, “Hail to the Guardian of the North, element of earth. Come to this circle now to guard and guide me in my work. I bid you welcome”, and so on for each element. When I close quarters I will say, “Hail Guardian of the North, element of earth. I thank you and release you. Go in power” and so forth for each element.

I don’t give elementals the option of staying. What I heard and read about commanding them, it wasn’t that they would stay all the time, but on the off chance one would actually linger, it could cause problems. Especially if over time you start to have multiple elementals wandering around your home. Also, from what I gathered you should treat them with respect but never treat them as an equal or something superior to yourself, because despite their power they are not and should never be given the impression that they are.

As far as summoning spirits for a particular spell, I haven’t gotten that far yet. I am not yet confident enough in my abilities to control a spirit if things go amiss.

That's cool, but I think you are still giving them an option for staying. If you tell someone that they are always welcome, they may get the idea that they can pop in any time they feel like it.

they are always around in one form or another. but if you were like "haha, were done now piss off!" they may not be so nice next time. but i doubt they would cause any harm if they lingered, if anything understands balance it's the elementals.

I'm polite and I thank them for their assistance before I dismiss them.

I'm polite, but I NEVER give them the option of staying. That's just a disaster waiting to happen.

I don't call on them in the first place, so no need to worry about how to dismiss them.
