Need Some Spells Please :)

Postby kittiekat93 » Thu Jan 18, 2007 8:58 pm

:D :D :D :D I have been chosen to go to a convention for acting and modeling only 400 people get to go (around 3000 people auditioned), its a competition, and the 2 things that i have to compete in, (i have to perform a tv thing and a commercial thing,) in front of a few hundred people. i get nervous talking in front of my class of 28 people!!!!!! does anyone have any simple confidence and/or calming spells that you can tell me? or just some tips for being able to do this? the convention is in march, but im scared pissless already.

I have a few ideas, hon.
First of all, congratulations :) I know you were looking forward to this! Let's see if we can help...

I don't know any actualy spells, but I have a few techniques and practices for you. I had to take a course in college last year where I had to do a 45 minute presentation on something related to my course so I have a bit of practice on speaking in public. I passed btw (lol).

1) Practice. This applies both to any script, fact sheet and posture. Spend some time each day working on how you carry yourself - back and neck alignment, eyes and chin up, shoulders back, stomach in. That stuff. Do it more and more until it's a natural part of the way you move. This way you have an image of confidence and you'll start to feel better about yourself as your core muscles are trained and your energy is more free to circulate.

2) Relax. Anytime you practice, anytime you start to feel flustered, and a couple times a day. Do a light meditation to calm your breathing, heart and thoughts. Smile.

3) Stretch. This improves circulation, flexibility and confidence. Don't forget face and hand stretches, they always get overlooked.

4) When in the actual presentation, ignore any facial expressions and postures in the audience. Instead, just be aware of the stage area. Pretend there's a white light or a shield of some kind that just separates your performing area from the world outside.

I'll add more if I think of them, but these are what I learned. Good luck!

congrats from me but i have some more practical help that worked for me.

know your script, if its improv, make up some key things you want to say

with acting know your character make up history and whatever if you know your character and you forget some lines since you are the character just talk dont stop for any reason.

dont look at anyone, if you must look in the direction of the audience look at chair legs or something else.

"I get nervous talking in front of my class of 28 people"

i had this same problem so think so nervous i was when i had to perform infront of my mum and the parent of my drama class plus my class. but once you get out and once you start your performance it takes you over and if you know your character and your lines pretty well you'll do fine.

Good luck with your audition. Brief meditation before going on may help. It's done wonders for me.

Congratulations. The advice given above is sound, it can be very difficult speaking in public, I've done it often, but I am the type of person who loves a captive audience.lol. You are achieving an ambition, that's wonderful, you have time to focus and plan, which will make a big difference, if I remember correctly, lots of the top actors have suffered from stage fright and nerves, many rely on little rituals before performing for good luck, so you 're in good company. Again, congratulations - you must have talent to be picked out - let that carry you too. Well done.
