My childhood "imaginary friends" spirit guides?

Postby GenevieveDawn » Wed Apr 04, 2007 8:23 pm

I'm sure some of you have read about this or heard this idea that those of us who had imaginary friends as children were either seeing spirits or these were possibly some of our spirit guides.

It was interesting because I already knew about this, but today my VERY christian mother apparently was watching Syliva Brown today and she was talking about it.

Ok so here is my question, my "imaginary friends" were Nelly, Kali and Tiger. Nelly I'm assuming would have been guide as I remember talking to her the most, Kali I know is a Hindu Goddess. Could a child have been conversing with a Hindu Goddess- who knows? So now I have been trying to figure out "Tiger". I was thinking perhaps a totem animal or something of the like. I don't know what else that could be. Anything spiritual involving animals is not my area of expertise at all. Any thoughts to this to what Tiger could be.

I would like to explore this area more and see if I can reconnect with these 3 if it is indeed what these were to me.

Hello Gen ! <waves>

Spirits 101

First, what was tiger's form? I know that may sound obvious, but I find that even the spirits of animals will sometimes shapeshift into humanoid forms to get our attention. Some do, some don't. Some will be offended if you even ask, some will say, "Hey, I can turn my nose green, too!"
But then, my totem is a shapeshifter my nature, and a trickster to boot.

I presume you feel a deep connection to Tiger. That's really the tell for wether Tiger is your totem, or if it's just that you have a tiger spirit in your entourage. I mean, the best way to tell is to start a meditation and ask for your totem animal to show up. If tiger does, then you know.

Some spirits have the names of Gods and Goddesses and aren't. That does make things rather confusing, but the Universe seems pretty adept at figuring out when you intend to speak to a Deity and there is rarely a problem in this regard. After all, you have an image or an idea in your head of what you are talking to, and that seems to go into the "packet" when you send out your communications.

To further confuse things, some Deities take the forms of less powerful spirits just to wander around and see what's going on in the world. Usually they would take the name of an item that represents them, (like "Candy" for Kali) rather than taking their "official" name (hindu deities often have several names) when doing this, but who am I to tell a Deity what to do?
Oh, and this form is usually a piece of them, since one of the fringe benefits of being a God is multi-colocation as true multi-tasking.

Also, as an FYI, Kali actually is very fond of children. She is frequently called to watch over children and protect them in India.

Also, moonstone posted a very nice sticky in the animals and totems topic that may help you get started working with your guides.

i was actually thinking along the lines last year if imaginary friends were imaginary or not, i leant towards no, my little brother had a family of them, the main one was what i would call the friend but the rest of the family would come to visit.

i hope you find the info your looking for because it is really an interesting topic.

Yeah, I probably should have addressed the *actual* topic of Imaginary Friends: spirits, or imaginary?

Here's what I remember from childhood. I had an eidetic memory when I was younger... though I'm now more normal now and forget stuff like everyone else. :-)

I had a number of "imaginary friends". A few were stuffed animal based, and at this point I have difficulty remembering wether they started out with personalities or if I made it up first and they got more spontaneous over time.

Some were beings that just seemed to hang around. They were fairly alien looking and capricious, and not very human. Personally, I think they were some kind of fair folk. Some I really did make up, but later they seemed to get minds of their own. I think I *made* them!

incarnations and manifestations of that sort arent unheard of, more common than most would think. ive only heard stories of my imaginary friend...i dont remember my childhood really, her name was sally, from what i understand she was human-ish, not some wierd creature. she got me in trouble alot...though knowing me it wasnt entirely her ;)

I 'd recommend looking at Bengal, the 'hot' area of India and home of the tiger. Look for stories of Kali in relation to this area, Nelly probably lies there too. Thought forms/entities and guides - could be all or some or not. Could be an interesting personal journey.

Wow interesting replies. I don't remember what any of these 3 looked like, or how old I was. all I remember is the names. I just figured Tiger could have been a totem only because I couldn't think of any "name" that sounded similar that I could have confused with Tiger.

If they are/were spirits that is one thing, but if they were guides then I defintely want to conncect again. I just think that would be awesome to get to know the ones who watched over you as a child.

There's a spell I read recently in 'Spiral Dance' that is a means to get re-acquainted with yourself as a child. It seems to me it would be a fairly valuable experience, and might help with this sort of thing! I'll check it tonight and post it!

I talked to my family on Easter and they think I have one of the names wrong. I am suppossed to ask one of my sisters who wasn't there, they said she would remember. The two sisters that were there, said that I would have tea parties with them and the other said that I would play upstairs on a landing with them and talk to them for hours. Pretty interesting, but they say it went on for years. I know kids get bored, but I would think it would be hard to maintain an imaginary friend for YEARS.

Well, I did. But I was the kind of kid who could watch the same episode of a TV show over and over and over again for months at a time.

I was also writing novels at age 8 or so.

Too bad I threw them away because they put my grandma to sleep.

I was stubborn. :-)

This got me thinking about an odd experience I had as a child... I tried to tell my parents about it when I was younger but they just told me it was a dream, but I swear if it was a dream it was the most real thing I have ever felt in my entire life.... please ya'll don't think I'm nuts lol...

I really thought at one point that I could walk through a mirror and go into this other place && there was a little man who would guide me through this place. I would go for hours and horus at a time... maybe I was dreaming, but I remember coming back and I'd been cut on the arm and I really had the cut. I probably was dreaming, but it felt so real to me.. *shrugs*
