Gift from the Storm

Postby Malvok » Thu Aug 23, 2007 2:28 am

A little while ago from me making this post it was really storming outside. I've always love it when it rained and stormed. i always felt really alive. but this time i was standing in the back doorway i had it open and i was standing there in the darn watching the sky. with the light pollution on the clouds the rain looked like it was flowing in waves across the sky. The wind was really gusting and as i thought maybe i should close the door, because i though it looked like tornado weather, with how the rain looked like it was making waves in the sky, the sky almoist looked like it was swirling.
Lightning flashed across the sky and as the thunder rolled in this branch from a elm tree nearby that didn't hand over the door way at all came crashing down in front of me off of what i think was the roof. landed right in front of me as i stood there with the door open. scared the crap out of me. The branch tip[ed over away from the door. and i slowly closed the door and went back to my room.

The branch freaked me out when i crashed right in front of me right when i though the storm was getting really bad. When the storm died out a few hours later i took the Machete we have in the side-room and hacked off a few branches to save i knew i couldn't save it all but i also didn't want to save to little of it. i'll see if i can get a picture of the whole branch and everything i saved tomorrow when it;s light out.

Lucky :) I've heard that wood from a tree that was struck by lightning is powerful for healing and protection.

And Elm too, very lucky indeed. The mother spirit of trees.

Elm (Ulmus spp.)

Names: Ulm, Embla, Elven

Medicinal Uses: the European elm is not used medicinally

Household Uses: Elm trees are good firewood, but very hard to split.

Traditional Magical Uses: Elm is supposedly beloved of the Alfar, and has been carried for charms to see them, as well as love spells.

Shamanic Magical Uses: Like Ash, Elm is associated with the first woman - Embla - and can be used in workings to honor the ancestors. It can be used as an anchor for pathwalking to Alfheim, because of its association with the Alfar. It is special to Odhinn, and also to Hoenir and the elemental giant Logi.

'Honeir' sounds like honour dosen't it?[read this below] My take -honour your ancestor. You talk with great fondness for your grandfather,do something creative with your branch,in memory of your grandfather- a wand perhaps?

The Mythology Of Asa Hoenir

My VP name, Hoenir, is taken from the mythology of the Nordic people. Hoenir is the name of an Aesir god, who is the brother of Odin. Unfortunately, the myths and legends involving Hoenir have become lost or changed with time and the name has slipped into relative obscurity, often referred to simply as "Hoenir, the silent". Here are the results of my research to learn more about my namesake. I find this very interesting myself...

The Beginning

First there was nothing, only chaos. Then one was born of the frost, and he was Ymir the Ancient Giant. He came upon Audhumla, the Giant Cow, and he lived on her milk. Others were formed from Ymir's sweat and the frost, and they were the Giants. Audhumla, the cow, licked the salt of a mountain, and from that salt was formed Bur, the first Aesir. Bur had a son, Börr. Ymir hated Bur for his beauty and soon Ymir and his sons killed Bur. The descendants of Bur sought revenge and killed Ymir and all of his sons except one. Odin (aka Woten, spirit) was the son of Börr, and his brothers were Hoenir (aka Vili, will) and Ve (holy). These three took Ymir's body and threw it into the chasm of chasms. From his bones they made mountains, from his teeth : rocks, from his sweat and blood : the seas, from his hair : the forests and trees, from his eyebrows : the realm of man, and from his skull : the sky.

The Birth Of Man

Odin, Hoenir, and Lodur (Odin's son) came upon two wooden blocks of ash, which they fashioned into the form of man and woman. These blocks they named Ask and Embla. To the blocks, Odin gave breath and life. Lodur gave to them feeling and emotion. And Hoenir gave to them reason and motion, speech and thought.

The Exchange of Hostages

After the Aesir had created the world, they went forth to make themselves a place to live. The twelve gods and twenty-four goddesses came upon a magnificent mountaintop they called "Asgard". However, they were not alone, for the Vanir were there before them. The Aesir and the Vanir waged war with each other. Finally they agreed that only by becoming allies could they flourish. As a symbol of the alliance, Van Frey (Freyr) and his children came to Asgard to live among the Aesir, and Asa Hoenir went forth to Vana-heim to live among the Vanir.

The Final Battle

After Ragnorak (The final battle of the gods), the world began to awake from the destruction. The Aesir Vali and Vidar found each other in the fields. Together they met Modi and Magni, the sons of Thor, who found Thor's hammer Miölnir and used it to kill all the remaining monsters. To them Hoenir came from Vana-heim, that realm having also been destroyed. And Baldur came forth from the realm of the dead, where he had been kept by Hela, the Queen of the dead. Baldur was reconciled with his blind brother Hödur, who had been tricked by Loki to send his brother to the Realm of the Dead. Together Vali, Vidar, Modi, Magni, Hoenir, Baldur, and Hödur turned to face the new world which they had inherited

i looked up trees online and by the leaves it would be a Ceder Elm tree. and there was plenty of wood to be saved from the branch i couldn't save it all. I had already planed on making a wand out of some of it, when i'm ready to. but i also have enough that i could make a couple good walking sticks out of some of what i saved and still have some left over. i'm going to upload the pictures as soon as i get them off my phone, hopefully that will be soon.

I can't wait to see your branch! That sounds really cool. I have a wand of lightening struck oak. I haven't carved it out yet, but it's very nice.
