Saffron

Postby Kolohe » Fri Mar 07, 2008 3:29 pm

Once the crocuses bloom in my yard (tiny little points sticking up now) can I pick the threads and dry them and use like normal saffron you'd buy at the store? Thanks!

Unless you know exactly what type of Crocus you have Kolohe I would advise you against picking and drying your own.
There is one type that is extremely poisonous - Colchicum - and that includes all parts.

You can buy bulbs for Saffron from specialist bulb suppliers so a google searh might be a good idea.

Incidentally most of the world's Saffron is grown not far from where I live - it's cheap as chips to buy from my local markets.

Wow, thats a good deal if you can get cheap saffron, everywhere else its very expensive, because it yields so little product, lol.

It's the work involved in picking the stamens that makes the price so high. Weight for weight it's more expensive than gold.

Thanks, I will skip that idea. I wasn't expecting to pick a lot anyway, maybe I am getting edgy to eat something from my garden already.

You can also get saffron from some grocery stores. I know I have seen it at the Cub Foods by my house.

I know that feeling.
Have you grown radishes before? Easiest (and quickest) food to grow IN THE WORLD.

Failing that how about cress.
