As stated in the Bhagavad Gita, the mind can be a person's dearest friend or worst enemy. Uncontrolled the mind would lead one to great suffering by simply focusing on the modes of nature ( that of goodness, passion, or ignorance). One who does not practice self discipline in all areas of life will definitely be faced with this great suffering, and without the control of the mind there will be no hope for transcendence along the spiritual path of growth.
Here are some tips for controlling the mind:
1) Meditation. Correct meditation should not cause drowsiness of the mind. This is caused by the sin of laziness born of the mode of nature known as ignorance. To counteract this, the Gita suggests closing one's eyes so only the tip of the nose is visible. If sleepiness still occurs then one should walk around until the feeling goes away and try again. When meditating one should say "Aum" and think only of the supreme lord seated in the heart or the universal form found everywhere.
2) Attaching one's mind to the lord and detaching it from passion and ignorance of the world (including the objects of the senses, false ego, and all things which change in the material world). Here is a link to a description of the 3 modes of material nature (http://www.asitis.com/14/). Now, this work is much easier said then done at first, because sometimes one has been powerfully conditioned to the lesser modes. If one is having trouble you should not fight to stop thinking about something, but rather fight to stay attached to the lord's consciousness. Pray for strength, and try with all your might to think of the lord in all of his/her glory.
3) Finally, a desire for transcendence must be cultivated to truly be able to make a difference and to be able to use your mind as a powerful weapon for good. This will happen quite naturally along the path of self-realization as one who has tasted the sweat nectar of remembrance will surely be drawn back. Studying the lord through spiritual writings is one way, or by doing the above two steps.
That's about all. I hope someone is helped by this post. Let me know about any problems people face, and I will help you in any way I can. Feel free to ask anything in a PM also if one is uncomfortable explaining things here.
Much love,
