Why Revisionist Theories?

Postby JuniperBerry » Sun Nov 21, 2010 9:01 pm

I've noticed that it's a common trend amongst neo-pagans to revise the mythologies and attributes of certain deities. It's a bit unsettling to me to see Gods or Goddesses that have a long tradition of being dangerous, dark and demanding suddenly becoming someone's loving, maternal beneficiary Goddess.

I think part of it is that "Wicca" hooks people with this earth-loving, peaceful ideal and misleads people into believing that Christianity is the big meanie that demonized all the wonderful and loving deities of pagan cultures. There is some truth and fact in the idea that Christianity assumed that pagan deities were agents of the devil, but they also worked quite hard to categorize the gods according to their attributes. Norse Thor became a counterpart for Greek Zeus etc and so on. They also catalouged the beliefs, the traditions, the means of worship. So, though they would say Thor was an agent of Satan to deceive the people, they would also highlight the positive worship. Usually chaotic or dark gods were noted as such.

I think another factor is the rather silly belief that the Gods are just happy to be worshipped again and so of course a darker god is goig to be tickled pink and nice to be called upon again. Because they're so dependent on man? Because they're vain? (Well, some are vain  ). The Gods do us favors, the gods take time out to interact with us- not the other way around. Sacrifice and offerings were a way to get the gods attention and favor because they are of a higher order than us, because we're dependent on them. They may care, they may have been watching all along, but they aren't cryign in their pillows at night because they've been forgotten. Especially not the darker gods.

Then there's also the fact that some don't take the gods seriously. They believe in magic, they believe in the history of paganism, but deep down they don't really believe it. Gods are just tools on a shelf to them and they pull them down when they need one's specific powers or when they liked the story behind them. They flip through a list of gods like it's a menu and pick and chose according to their sense of entitlement or curiousity. And then they don't even have the decency to worship and acknoweldge the god/dess according to her traditions and personality. "I have a special loving relationship with Medusa that no one else understands!" I bet that could make one feel pretty special, which is another perk of changing the gods to suit your needs.

Finally, I think some people identify with the more rebeliious and darker gods because they feel that way in their own lives and wish to be sympathized with and understood as well. Most pagan gods are imperfect. Most have their flaws, their vanities, their distractions and rebellions. But they are on a completely different order than those who are dark, who are dangerous, aggressive, chaotic. It's important to be true to the centuries of wisdom and teachings that accompany the gods, rather than to make them want we want them to be.

:|

Just some thoughts.
The Gods we worship write their names on our faces; be sure of that. A person will worship something, have no doubt about that. We may think our tribute is paid in secret in the dark recesses of our hearts, but it will out. That which dominates our imaginations and our thoughts will determine our lives, and our character. Therefore, it behooves us to be careful what we worship, for what we are worshipping we are becoming.

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

As believers in the folk-religion we are studying, we seek after mysteries that expand the scope of our gods and our understanding of them, not reductionist theories that reduce them to manageable and socially productive "functions".

Something similar to that has happened with mythological creatures has happened for much longer. It's why as time goes by people bunch up more and more very different creatures in the same group as more or less the same thing. I mean how did we go from mythological vampiric creatures like Strigoi to.. Well twilight. My grandson kin who is a demon but also is a vampire, likely the disorder or whatever one would call it was caused by a certain injury of his in one of his eyes.. For some reason though I never made jokes on other sort of things involving mythology about vampires to get at him I thought it would be funny to ask him if he sparkled. He was more offended by that joke then anything else I ever said to him^^; Then again I think he's fine with most vampire mythology, just not fine with the idea of vampires.. Sparkling. But ether way, the point I was trying to get to before steering off course is I could see how that would upset you. Not only is what they are doing insulting to those gods if they do exist but they are also distorting their identities to suit them. If too many people did that then it would get harder and harder for later generations to remember what the true identity of those gods are.

I don't believe in Gods but I won't use them either. I'd like to "work" with them though, to get to know the energy quality. Like I would pick one God, meditate a few days/weeks about him, read up things, try to feeld the special quality and how to invoke this quality in myself without ising the God. I wouldn't call on them, not even in meditation.

Since I don't believe in Gods, I have my own opinion on the dark and chaotic Gods. In my opinion they are just shadows who need to be tranformed. Many Gods associated with sexuality are dark and chaotic Gods. Cause in many sexuality is an uncontrollable and chaotic force which need to be repressed. If you work with an associated God, you are able to transform those energies in yourself into something useful and not so dark and chaotic anymore. So I think calling to dark Gods is really something God, if you are willing to transform.

But if you believe in Gods, their powers, their exitence, their reality and you go on just change them how you want them, I see that's kind of wrong and would surely be backfire on you. I think those lack the understanding of what they are doing and aren't interested in the real thing, to think, but rather doing some fast and fluffy things without using their brains.

I agree more with Traumwandlerin on this .. whilst I believe in magic, energy manipulation and many of the pagan beliefs I see the gods and godesses more as metaphors. For example if you are incorperating the power of Venus you are calling to the part of your psyche that deals with love.
'm really interested in mythology from all cultures so if I find a deity which would work well with something specific I'll just write myself a note reminding me of my thoughts.
I do see what you mean though if you look at some of the more 'evil' deities it is usually misinterpretation giving them those qualities. Eg, I saw a thread on Lilith a couple of days ago and whilst she can be considered the first feminist - definately a good quality - she has been said to have eaten babies. And who added that to the mythology ? People who felt that she was a bad role model.
I think people should be careful on who they choose to look at but it's worth remembering a lot of deities will have their mythology changed over the years.

I see that everything has its dark side and you shouldn't strap it off. The eating babies thing, why not? This surely symbolizes something, even if I don't get what ;) I wouldn't say it was added to make it a bad role model.

Also I'm not saying there are no Gods, I just say I don't believe in them and therefore they don't have a place on my path. I'm not calling to them, they don't call on me. When somebody calls on them, they should do it right ;)
