guidance please!

Postby freemysoul » Tue Jan 28, 2014 3:53 am

Hello friends,
Having been drawn to wicca for a long time, and having recently realized that this is the path I am to take, I have been trying to as much research and reading as possible. Problem is, its all so overwhelming! Trying to figure out somewhere to start besides all the reading. Also looking for more material such as websites that are recommended. And tips and advice are greatly appreciated! Also, having difficulty as the town I live in has no access to any resources! Feeling discouraged and in a rut :(
Thank you for any help:)

Hello and welcome. Maybe we could help you best if you tell us what is overwhelming you. Is there too much information? Is the information contradictory? Is some of it confusing?

If you're looking for online resources, this website has a lot of free books on witchcraft, paganism, Wicca etc. http://www.themagicknook.com/ebooks/ (thank you so much whoever originally posted this) If you're not too overwhelmed with reading, I suggest trying Wicca: A guide for the solitary practitioner by Scott Cunningham. Click the link I posted above and then select Wicca/Witchcraft. Three columns now come up. Under the Heading Beginning Wicca/Witchcraft select link no. 4 A guide for the solitary practitioner.pdf' It start's off with a good introductory chapter to Wicca (What do Wiccans believe), and then talks about the Wiccans Gods. It also names common magical instruments and tells you what they're used for, gives information about performing rituals, and explains what the Sabbats are. I found it to be a good starting point.

I agree with Obsidian that Scott Cunningham is an excellent author to start with. His books are very easy to follow, and his writing style is wonderfully engaging. :)

I remember when I first started studying, I bought almost twenty books at once and was flipping through all of them, back and forth! There was so much information and I wanted to absorb as much of it as I could, as quickly as I could, because I was excited, and curious. However, as much as I enjoyed all of the research, I didn't get very far on my path. It was simply too much at one time for me, and much of what I read didn't stick.

So, the most important lesson for me was: Take your time.

Many Wiccans and Pagans like to use the 'year and a day' format of studying, because it gives them a large period of time in which to study, meditate, and spiritually grow. While I didn't do that myself, I like that the method encourages you to take a single concept and spend a few weeks with it. Keeping a journal of your thoughts and what you find out from books, articles, and internet sources about that concept can be extremely helpful as well. Compare and contrast the different viewpoints (because there are dozens!), and work through what you personally think. Take the time to get as familiar as possible with one thing, and when you feel that you have a very firm grasp on it, then you can move on to another. :fairy:

I must agree with Heartsong and Obsidian on Scott Cunningham, for a first book on the wiccan path, he is one of my favorite. While the information are basic, they are exactly what we need as an introduction for wicca. His writing style is definitely one of his good point, he also talk a lot about how the learning part of the path is important; and that is something a lot of authors forget.
Also, I might recommand All One Wicca by Kaataryn McMorgan and A wiccan Bible by AJ Drew. While they are more dense information-wise; they taught me a lot. It can be quite difficult to go through them, even with all the intention; but the information and point of view are defintely worth it to acquire a general but deep information on your path.

I also concur with Heartsong on the "take your time" point. I was exactly like that too, finding all the books and wanting to learn everything i could put my hands on -i still do that on a everyday basis with a subject i find interesting, but in this xase, it's counter productive. While everything is remembered, i still can't apply a good majority of the knowledge, because I didn't take the time to think and question about what i've read, and coming gradually into what I wanted for me and my path. It unfortunately led to a difficult period; that came out with the intent on doing it right once more. Which is good, but wanting to learn everything and not taking your time is not.

The idea of the year and a day study is quite good to avoid such a situation, and there are a few threads about it, if you want different opinions on it. Keeping a journal is definitely a must (or a great might) in those time, or just if you want to trace back your knowledge and grow it with your own imput/experiences and ideas. When you think that you are finished with an idea or a part of teaching, why not make yourself a pop-quizz of some sort before going for another part? You will get more familiar with your knowledge, but also your beliefs. And well, your opinion and point of view is also a very important thing to nuture !

Thank you for the quick replies! I have bought 2 books so far, one by Silver Ravenwolf and the other by Scott Cunningham. I mistakenly grabbed the "further" guide by him and somehow seemed to have misplaced Ravenwolf during my move! I think what is mainly overwhelming me is the loads of information and so many different viewpoints. As well as things like spells and rituals. What if I don't have an altar? What if I don't have cinnamon oil or the correct colored candles? ( here the downside of the town I live in). Also I get the concept of God and Goddess... but there seem to be so many! Is this pointing to 2 specific ones, or the ones of my choosing? For sabbats, there seem to be so many different ways of celebrating, are there some better than others.. Trying to take my time, but as you all say, this is difficult when its all so exciting :)

If you don't have everything you need, or think you need, and your need for a spell is dire, you work with what you have (Believe me, the gods and the energies you work with know what circumstances you find yourself in, and tend to be understanding of that). Tools are, for the most part, focal aids. They can help you concentrate your intent, but they aren't strictly necessary.

There are many different kinds of altars, and no two witches, or pagans, are going to set theirs up in the same way. My first altar was a chair with a white towel draped over it, one bowl of water, and one bowl of salt (because I simply had nothing else to work with), but I still felt a connection to my gods and still had a successful divination that night. It's the intention behind it, what you're using it for, is what makes an altar an altar. I came to that chair, knelt, and poured my heart out, and dedicated myself that night to walking my path. Haven't looked back since. :) Over time, I built up from those simple pieces, and when I felt that I had everything I wanted for an altar, I felt that I was ready to go a step further from an initiate to a witch. I, like my altar, felt complete.

As far as the gods go, in my experience, they choose you. While some people feel an instant connection to certain deities, others take years of searching and meditation until they connect. Others go through life with no dominant deity in their life whatsoever.

And to answer your final query, no, I personally don't think one way of celebrating the Sabbats is any better than another. It's what feels right to you, what is within your means, and what helps make the meaning of the Sabbat resonate with you. They're times of reflection and times of connection, with the universe and with each other. They're meant to bring us closer to the gods, to the earth, and to our spiritual selves. Just lighting a candle or spending time stargazing can be powerful, spiritual experiences that forge just that kind of connection. :)

Also, it might be helpful to you to take a look through our F.A.Q. section: there's lots of threads there where people have asked similar questions, and you might find some further answers there, specifically these two:

In my opinion, you can learn from "Living Wicca: A Further Guide for the Solitary Practitioner" without having read it's predecessor. I, myself, read the above years before I got the chance to read "Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner." Living Wicca was one of the first books I read on Wicca, and to this day it remains one of my favorites. :)
I think a real easy way to start is to pick the one topic you're most interested in and research it. There are a lot of books that cover all aspects of Wicca, but since there's so much information, books only have a limited space to cover everything. You might want to see if you can find a book that covers a single topic or perhaps only a couple topics like "The Complete Book of Incense, Oils and Brews" by Scott Cunningham. Also, once you've got a topic picked out, you'll have an idea of where to search the forum for answers.
Take your time, study and enjoy yourself! :D

Ahhh, I believe Scott Cunningham's books are a favorite of lots of us !
I had 7 of his, but 3 are on loan :( one I know I can get back; Scott's
Gem, Mineral, and Metal book (something like that, I can't think right now)
Might I suggest when you've read a few books and have a general idea
of what your path MAY be... When you get to the part of researching
Elementals, try Deborah Lipp; she's a good read like Scott !
Enjoy your reading, don't look at it like a chore or you won't retain
any of what you read. I look forward to reading posts of your journey.

I love all of my reading ! I get so excited when that time of the day comes :) and super excited to begin working on my book of shadows, I got a beautiful one a while ago and can't wait to fill it ! Think I might need to start ordering other supplies online, as well as more books! Herbs, crystals and candle magic really interest me, as well as sabbats and more of the goddesses and gods :)

Yes - read but also do hands-on activities to ignite your awareness. Use your spidey-senses to feel the life energies outdoors. Inhale & exhale thoughtfully & aware of surroundings. Light a candle, observe the flame & don’t let your mind wander.

Build a starter kit with things from the grocery store house-wares (utility candles), baking isles (herbs & oil). Table salt is traditional for purifying & olive oil for anointing spells to transfer & hold a psychic charge 🙌🏽. Herbal teas are a multi tasking resource. Herbs, incense & oils go by scent: sweet🌺 smelling for peace & love, citrusy🍋 for uplifting & cleansing, & spicy 🌶 for protection. Any palm sized stone you like has uses for grounding, stress relief & spells. Let Nature show you through your senses.

Simplify circle ritual into the basic parts. 1st purify and bless the area then load-aim-shoot👉🏼 to cast ⭕️ . Anything after that is optional. Calling the quarters holds a circle in place. Invite deities for worship and partnership. A blessed meal says thanks. Farewell deities and release the quarters to set all back to normal. Ground yourself so you aren’t spacey.

That can get you started. Embellish as you go. What do you want to accomplish? Enjoy 😊
