Working with Hekate

Postby Epithymia » Wed Jun 25, 2014 4:47 pm

I was wondering if working with Hekate is safe. About 8 years ago I worked with her once based on a friends recommendation , that's a whole different story. We went to the crossroad in the graveyard very late at night , he gave me the things to cast my circle , an invocation along with offerings and incense he had made. It was honestly the most intense experience I have ever felt/ had happen while practicing , even though I feel with Ochun the intensity is not even comparable. Chaos was what came after contacting her, for about 2 years after. I find myself very fearful of her but close at the same time if that makes sense. I have toyed with the idea of working with her again but can it be done with less chaos? Do you have to be more careful with her then others? I know this might seem ignorant of me to ask but it has been on my mind a lot.

Hekate does have a bit of a reputation to be quite honest. However I do know many who have worked with her on and off and regularly and have had quite positive experiences. Here is some background on her:

Hekate is a powerful triple Goddess of the moon, earth, and underworld. Perhaps originally a moon Goddess, Her name means "Far-Darter," which is a title also given to Apollo the sun God Whose rays are like arrows, and indeed She was often equated with His archer sister Artemis. Hekate is said to have come from Thrake, a land the Greeks considered barbaric, and most accounts name Her daughter of the Titans Perses (by some accounts brother to Kirke) and Asteria ("Starry," also an epithet of Aphrodite), both Deities of light. As the moon, Hekate (with Helios, the sun) served as witness when Demeter's daughter Kore was abducted, since the moon and sun see all.

As an earth Goddess, Hekate could grant wealth and riches. As Hekate Trioditis ("Goddess of Crossroads") or Trivia (the Latin form of the word), She protected crossroads, especially those where three roads met, and is shown in triple form standing back to back to back, sighting down each road. She also protected travellers, especially solitary ones in lonely places.

As Goddess of the Underworld Hekate was said to attend Queen Persephone (aka Kore), and associate with spirits, ghosts and hounds. She also had great powers of magic and witchcraft. On Earth, She was known to haunt tombs and places where crimes had happened, and was followed by Her ghostly train and spectral hounds. Though humans could not see Her, earthly dogs always could. Sacrifices were made to Her on the last day of the month in the Greek lunar calendar, at the dark of the moon.

Hekate in a reading can indicate a time of solitude, and some accompaying fear of that situation. Foresight and open eyes are recommended at this time.

As when working with any Deity many times they will come to you, but not always. With the fact that Hekate is a Goddess of the Underworld she tends to come to those in need of her. Then and now Hekate is a goddess of Witchcraft and those who walk between the worlds. In the ancient world she was the patroness of those magicians- often women and the transgendered - who practiced magic, herbalism, and religion outside of the boundaries of the established temples and civil authorities of Greece. This is one reason she and her followers have often been feared and reviled. They stand with at least one foot outside of the conventional world.

She is not commonly portrayed as such, she is also sometimes seen as a shamanic deity. Her Underworld is the abode of the Shadow-Self and the journeys of the shaman to confront it. It is also the place of the shamanic ordeal of death, dismemberment, and rebirth. A place of otherworldly spirits who may aid or hinder the practitioner. Likewise, her followers are people who walk between the worlds, whether the worlds of magical and mundane, urban and rural, men and women, conventional and unconventional society. For all those who need a companion on the dark pathways they must walk, Hekate goes with them.

So typically speaking with all of that being said and to answer you don't really have to be more careful of her but call upon her for the right needs as she is a little different than most other deities. I hope this helps you. Blessed Be.

I have worked with her just a handful of times. I mainly work with Isis and Bast. My experience with Hecate though was pleasant, just like any other Deity I have worked with.
