God/ goddess correspondence

Postby Xx » Thu Jul 17, 2014 12:03 am

Is there a god/ goddess correspondence? I saw one for the food they like but not what stones, candles or inscense to use. I have researched it but what I found was little help.

I'm not sure there's a correspondence table for all the gods and goddesses ... I feel like unless there's a very specific story that connects a god/dess with a stone or incense or whatever (for example, Aphrodite's connection to sea shells), then most correspondences are fairly flexible anyways, and with a little creativity and research of their myths, you can substitute your own. For instance, since Hestia, the goddess of the Hearth, is associated with fire, then it would be quite appropriate to honor her with a red candle. I also feel like the gods (at least the ones worth giving offerings to, anyways) should be able to know when an offering is made sincerely and appreciate it for that, even if it's not exactly their preference.

I've seen some lists for each pantheon before for traditional colors and associations for Gods and Goddesses. I'm sure it could work like a correspondence table. I was never really comfortable with that though. In basic lore books on the Gods they typically list what they are Gods of on the information pages including the myths and other information. So those books are excellent resources for correspondences and associations.

Though Xiao is right. You should read the myths and meet the Gods and come up with your own interpretations and understandings. Its important that the associations make sense to you so you can build a relationship with the God or Goddess. They will let you know if something is going to work for them or not.

You can ask for personal experiences with specific Gods for ideas. I've heard from many people that Loki likes cinnamon schnaps as an offering. There is nothing in the lore to explain that other than personal experiences people have had with the Gods as they gave offerings in rituals. The important thing about personal experiences is that they are just that, personal experiences with offerings. What one person finds works for them may not work for you.

A book that might help is "Llewellyn's Complete Book of Correspondences: A Comprehensive & Cross-Referenced Resource for Pagans & Wiccans" by Sandra Kynes. It's a little expensive, but that's because its size can be compared to that of a phone book. :P Its a real helpful book. There is a section where you can search correspondences by deities. This might help as well http://paganwiccan.about.com/od/godsand ... s_Gods.htm
I would suggest using these two sources as a sort of starting point in addition to the above suggestions of reading mythology and working with the gods.

I would recommend you also read A Garden of Pomegranates by Israel Regardie. More than likely, you won't find exactly what you're looking for, but it gives you a good system for discovering correspondences and then cataloging them. You can easily work around the large amount of Judaic material.

I would read the history or myths/legends around the specific deity and find out what corresponds with them.

Once you get more familiar with them and work with them you will get a feeling for what they would like. And as Xiao said I dont think they will be offended or anything if you offer them something that they are not known for.
